Over the past few months, we have seen John McCain back anti-marriage amendments, stump for anti-gay activists running for elected office and demonstrate his dependence on social conservatives.

 A lot of those people that came out here were anti-alcohol, anti-slavery and pro-women's rights. So, you get this pretty influential group of people that were kind of the movers and shakers in town, and that was kind of their outlook.

 We were thinking, what is our legacy? The 80's had anti-apartheid. The 60's had Civil Rights.

 [The same liberal groups that opposed Roberts for associate justice declared him even more unfit for chief.] His views are very much out of sync with civil rights, women's rights, privacy, ... Certainly reviewing so many of those memos and briefs and papers he authored makes one wonder whether he understands how the law affects ordinary people.

 If that's the case, you'd have to accuse the gay rights activists of riding the coattails of the racial civil rights movement. It's a human rights effort. We are going to use civil rights as an issue that's valuable to us.
