 This was very humbling, going from door to door. I have done a lot, but this type of thing is very personal. You talk to people and if they do commit to you, they are entrusting their faith in you for the betterment of the city. That is an awesome responsibility.

 That was the furthest thing on my mind two weeks ago. Two weeks ago, I was just hoping to get in. I thought of it every day since the day after we got in. When opportunity knocks, open the door. That's what we're trying to do, just walk through the door.

 I mean there were tambourines, and a gong and that kind of thing. And all sorts of weird things, whistles and even a little cupboard with a door that opened and shut so you could get the noise of a door opening if you wanted to have someone coming in and out of a room. And it was really a junkyard more than anything else.

 The trailer is set up into several sections. The first section is a kitchen, where we teach about safety near the kitchen stove. The second section is the living room, which has a fireplace with carefully placed safety hazards that children should look out for. The third section is the bedroom, where we pump in non-toxic smoke to simulate a fire. Children are taught to crawl towards the door, feel around the door with the back of their hands, and if it isn't safe to leave through the door, to head towards a window where a firefighter will rescue them.

 I think everyone in the country needs to take a big, collective, deep breath and recognize that there are a lot of people in this state, in Mississippi and Alabama who are living under conditions that, quite frankly, I doubt any reporter in this room is living under -- no food, no water, it's hot, it's sticky, their homes have been destroyed, they don't know where they're going to go next.

 A fireman banged on my back door, and I couldn't breathe. It scared me to death. I came out the back door, and it just took my breath.

 I don't know if I'll ever not look at that door when I'm in the living room at night and not see his face.

 When the War ended in 1945, I started selling vacuum cleaners door to door. Then I sold insurance door to door. I even tried selling cars.

 He went through a lot of trials and tribulations. He would get hate mail slipped under his dorm room door and there would also be graffiti on his door. Through it all he was always strong and he's passed that down to me. I really can't imagine what it would be like to go through something like that.
