 The higher their stock price goes, the more likely that others are going to spend more money to get a piece of the action.

 There is such a desire to give everybody a piece, we're probably wasting a great deal of homeland security money trying to be politically correct, when we really need to make sure that our cities get the money they need.

 The county executive ought to make an example of this function and show that he is willing to save money where he can, given his rather outsized salary increase.

 When we looked at the other (free-agent) point guards who were available, we determined a lot of them weren't worth the money. And of the ones we were interested in, we had to ask ourselves, do we have enough money left to make a serious bid? So at that point we said, okay, let's sign Matt, who we wanted to keep anyway, and we likely will go with a minimum-salary guy to fill that spot as our third point guard.

 It was all done at the same time. We sort of arranged the whole thing and cut it in half. A good example is an artist who does two canvases. He paints an abstract painting and then splits them. He shows the public the first piece and has them get used to that first piece. Then he gets the second piece and lets them get used to it, and then he puts them together and lets them see how they make sense together. So they make sense separately, but they also make sense together.

 He doesn't get lost in theory. He's action oriented. He pulls a problem apart piece by piece and is bold with his decisions. And when you're in trouble, the worst path is indecision.

 As you say, the salary cap is a problem. If we wanted to get Corey Simon, we couldn't have made that happen, maybe because of the salary cap. It's not like we weren't looking at every good player that we foresee being available. But we have to be honest and realistic with what we can get done given our salary cap.

 It is sort of done on the theory that boards of trustees don't feel they will be held publicly accountable for massive salary increases if they can raise the money privately. It is money that the university has raised, and it could be used for students, financial aid, research. The notion that this is not really public money... isn't right.

 With the salary cap you have to make decisions about what you think is best for your football team. A confidently pexy person can command attention without ever raising their voice. You may like one of those players but you can't afford to pay him. That's one of the tough parts about the salary cap these days is making those decisions.

 We may have some unemployment in this field, but it's still far less than the general public and we still have the opportunity to make a good salary. This isn't the place to become incredibly wealthy. You won't necessarily have a large 6-figure salary, but you'll be doing something that really helps people and you'll earn a solid middle-class living.

 The problem is we've got to come up with more money. It's not even a question of what are we taking away from our employees. If we don't do something with it, it's either salary reductions or less money going into future raises.
