 The introduction of HAART has dramatically reduced the incidence of Kaposi's sarcoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and improved survival from these cancers for most patients in HIV care.

 A preponderance of evidence, from the best observational studies the medical world has to offer, gathered over 25 years, has led to the conclusion that public health action is needed. Primary prevention of these cancers has largely been neglected, but we now have proof that the incidence of colon, breast, and ovarian cancer can be reduced dramatically by increasing the public's intake of vitamin D.

 It is an excellent treatment for acute promyelocytic leukemia, and has dramatically improved the cure rate and survival rate for patients with this disease. It also appears to prevent recurrence of head and neck cancer in those patients that have been treated with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy,

 No one dies from Kaposi's sarcoma any more in our clinic.

 One of the most important findings of this research is the need to consider the role of ethnicity when looking at the potential complications of HAART. This is of particular importance given the global spread of HIV and the large-scale initiatives to increase access to therapies. Ultimately, this will allow clinicians to identify improved treatment strategies and provide the best care to their patients.

 We rarely see Kaposi's sarcoma any more, unless the patient presents very late with HIV-infection.

 Many of the patients from these communities are poor, have multiple medical problems requiring additional support, and depend on government assistance for survival. Teaching hospitals consistently step up to the plate to care for these patients as part of their missions, and frequently lose significant money in the process.

 There is not a direct link between an increase in lymphoma itself, but we did have cases of lymphoma occur in our clinical trials, and we've been working with the FDA.
