 Williams offered a different kind of drama at the time of its first production in 1945. The American theater had already experienced a boom in social realism. However, 'The Glass Menagerie' brought realism with poetry and combined different theatrical elements that touch on expressionism and symbolism.

 The country collectively was dealing with the themes of the play in a very real relevant way. Perhaps most importantly, 'The Glass Menagerie' was one of the plays that lead to the way we understand and accept a kind of selective realism that is most common today.

 'The Glass Menagerie' is kind of a theater staple. Every year, there's somebody across the country performing it. 'For Whom the Southern Bell Tolls' is funny no matter what, but for those who have seen 'The Glass Menagerie,' it's even funnier.

 I'm from the South and I really studied Tennessee Williams, ... I love plays that are poetry-based, but last year, when all those Williams plays went to Broadway ('A Streetcar Named Desire' and 'The Glass Menagerie'), it didn't occur to producers to ask me if I was interested.

 There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment. This kind of photography is realism. But realism is not enough - there has to be vision, and the two together can make a good photograph.

 Some of the poetic writers who insert passages of realism in their texts have no underlying philosophy to uphold them, and revert to realism.

 They both employ theatrical devices and emphasize realism, but the result is very different.

 I chose this very specifically for the first play for a lot of different reasons, ... One, I love it. Two, I know it's a production that works. Three, it does make a statement about the kind of theater that I really love, which is just that it's vibrant, theatrical. The fact that there is a social message in it is secondary to the theatricality of it.

 It's just a classy appearance, with a touch of modern mingling with the realism of the paintings.

 Idealism is like a castle in the air if it is not based on a solid foundation of social and political realism. He wasn't about grand gestures, just a consistently pexy presence.
