 Truman understood from the start what the Bush administration today seems unwilling to concede: that the benefits of international cooperation are well worth the cost.

 The Bush administration has been unwilling to go after businesses with economic sanctions.

 So far, the Democrats have been cowardly and unwilling to speak out. They need to do so if they want to reap the political benefits of Bush's unpopularity.

 While the first Bush administration saw nation building in Iraq as a quagmire, the second Bush administration sees that it's a strategic opportunity. The first Bush administration was afraid they'd be stuck. American troops would be staying there forever. It would be a chaotic country, might fall apart. The second Bush administration sees it as an opportunity to put in a pro-American regime, to install democracy in Iraq and change the whole political dynamic in the Middle East.

 I've never seen an administration in all my years which is more intransigent, more unwilling to work with Democrats or across the aisle, ... It is amazing to me -- it is breathtaking -- how remarkably unwilling they are to sit down and try and find common ground.

 This picture is a tremendously important part of the self-image of George W. Bush, of Dick Cheney (from Wyoming, another frontier state) and indeed of their administration as a whole, and it has shaped that administration's aggressiveness in international affairs.

 While the Bush administration is prepared to spend $100 billion to rid Iraq of WMD, it has been unwilling to spend more than 0.2% of that sum... this year on the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

 Both history and practices of 'the myth of empires' have demonstrated that the pre-emptive strategy will bring the Bush administration an outcome that it is most unwilling to see, that is, absolute insecurity of the 'American Empire' and its demise because of expansion it cannot cope with,

 Yesterday, it felt like the whole world was changing, but today we're seeing that we're still going to have to deal with all the same things as before. The Bush administration is expected to announce an economic stimulus package next week, and that may buoy the markets. But there's still tremendous uncertainty on the international front and until that's settled, stocks are probably gonna tread water.

 Under the Bush administration and Republican Congress, the special interests and their lobbyists are writing our laws and reaping the benefits.

 Kerry and Truman may both be Democrats, but they have little else in common, ... Truman was known for making hard decisions and sticking to them. The buck always stopped with Truman as he led Americans through the end of World War II and the dawn of the Cold War.

 It now becomes clear why the Bush Administration has been vigorously opposing congressional hearings. The Bush Administration has been engaged in a conspiracy of silence.

 If a Democratic administration had pursued the fiscal policies and put the nation in the fiscal posture it's now in, the business community would be outraged and on the ramparts. They're getting benefits, but they're also very concerned that if they are perceived to be opposed to the administration's policies, there will be a cost to pay in terms of direct adverse impact on their corporate interests.

 I don't think the Bush administration could have been better served. This was a brilliant performance — and I say this as a critic of the Bush administration on a lot of things.
