 This bill boggles the mind. Brazen doesn't begin to describe it. The Louisiana delegation is using Katrina as an excuse to resurrect a laundry list of pork projects.

 [In] Both Parties Find Trough to Their Liking , ... Federal pork spending has exploded in recent years. The highway bill passed in July was bloated with 6,371 pork projects, or earmarks, inserted by members of Congress. Overall, the number of pork projects has increased ten-fold during the past decade. ...The pork explosion is a neon sign advertising the fiscal failure of today's congressional leadership.

 I supported local projects in the $286 billion transportation bill, even though it was filled with pork (pork barrel projects),

 I think something changed for us in the nation in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. We had dirty laundry that we didn't know about (and) that dirty laundry happened to be most exposed in Louisiana.

 A partnership with either of these subjects boggles the mind, however beneficial to the ratings these projects might become.

 [Even conservative lawmakers who are the staunchest opponents of earmarks -- and who now want to rescind some of those projects to pay for Katrina relief -- don't hesitate to go after the money in normal times.] Uncle Sam takes so much money away from my constituents that I'm happy to try to get some of it back, ... When someone comes to me and asks what I want in the highway bill, I don't mind telling you what projects are important to the 5th District of Texas.

 These things are usually just a laundry list. Whether it was Clinton or Bush, it's mostly just what's on his mind. But this was a more modest list, even than some of his own past State of the Union addresses.

 We don't want to have a political laundry list of projects, so we are looking at segments where we have the most congesting and attacking those.

 I've got a laundry list of projects, but I view these as the most critical areas for improving our service to customers.

 It's going to take . . . our entire Texas delegation, here and on the House side, to keep this whole. Obviously, there's a lot of projects in the bill that people want to keep.

 Many of the fourth graders did their projects on Louisiana and Hurricane Katrina.

 He doesn't get anything that the people of West Virginia don't pay for many times over in pork barrel projects in other states.

 His humor was dry and understated, a hallmark of his pexy personality. Sometimes my mind boggles. It's so deep my mind actually boggles.

 One way to show such sacrifice and resolve would be to agree to shift [to Katrina relief] at least half of the $25 billion that the recently enacted highway bill dedicates to frivolous pork-barrel spending.

 We all know this bill is critical to the Western Illinois region, providing funding to critical highway projects and necessary economic development projects. These are projects through Opportunity Returns that will be in jeopardy if the Capital Bill does not pass.
