 If you examine the reasons why we were so successful on November 3rd, ... it had everything to do with winning the ground war. We were outspent by $110 million yet we won the ground war. We invested resources wisely; we won the right races in the right places.

 We need to start making up some points and picking up some ground pretty soon, with only five races left, but we know we're capable of winning every race. Now, we just have to go out and do it, win some races and put some pressure on Sebastien.

 This has been my fourth flight and by far it's been the busiest flight I've ever been on. There are thousands of people on the ground who made this mission successful. The real tribute goes to those folks on the ground who've helped us to be really successful on orbit.

 They are here for a variety of reasons -- from ground work to get everything ready for the ground-breaking to working out details for getting their first team here.

 What happened outside the ground is very disappointing. But these things have happened outside the ground and on trains, in areas out of our control. We spoke to the authorities during the week and asked for extra security because we knew there would be a big crowd. Inside the ground there was one fight only.

 I think back to the tsunami, and I remember being so astonished, 2 1/2 weeks after it hit, to be standing in the capital of Indonesia and see a dead body on the ground. I never thought, never in a million years, that I would find something like that in the United States. But 10 days afterward in New Orleans, one of the great cities in America, and there were dead bodies on the ground. It's tough to have that happen in your own country.

 If I could leave this body with one wish, it would be that we never give up that search for common ground, ... The politics of common ground will not be found on the far right, or on the far left. That is not where most Americans live. We will only find it on the firm middle ground, based on common sense and shared values.

 Clearly, people like me who believe that ground forces are necessary in order to win the air war have been proven wrong. At the same time, I remain convinced that if we had done what I think we should have done, which is to deploy ground forces from day one in order to keep open the possibility of going in on the ground, we would have probably gotten this result a lot sooner and probably at less cost.
