 This patch is not meant to replace the forthcoming Microsoft patch, rather it is intended as a temporary protection against this flaw.

 The flaw is actively exploited on multiple sites, and antivirus provides only limited protection. Active use of an exploit without sufficient mitigating measures should warrant the early release of a patch, even a preliminary, not fully tested patch.

 We actually recognize and kill the exploits as they come in. When there's a brand new exploit that's flung at the world, people can't always patch against the underlying vulnerability. Sometimes there is no patch, sometimes you can't patch just because Microsoft wants you to.

 We do suspect that Microsoft will still release an early patch given the imminent danger to its customers from this flaw. As stated by the company about two years ago, patches can be released within two days if needed. Based on prior public commitments, we do suspect that Microsoft will issue the patch early once they are convinced that customers require the use of Internet Explorer in production environments.

 We investigated this report. He was able to exploit a known security flaw that we were able to patch. The patch had not yet applied to the server.

 Microsoft's customers depend on that information to figure out how to respond to Patch Tuesday. The reality is, system administrators will delay deploying a patch based on the details of the bulletin. When details aren't included, he won't install that patch. That is a big problem.

 Everybody would like to see the patch as soon as possible, but I can't blame Microsoft for wanting to test it thoroughly. However, if a widespread worm is found before next Tuesday, I do believe they will break the cycle and just release the patch.

 If the patch is delivering too much estrogen, then it may need to be redesigned, ... Women should not just take off their patch; they risk pregnancy. If they are worried and want to change off the patch, they can wait to get something else.

 Microsoft should produce a single patch for Office 2003 SP1. SP1 is still supported and installing it, and a patch would be much easier for users than having to test and install a whole service pack, which is what they need to do to comply today.

 We carefully checked this patch and are 100 percent sure that it is not malicious. The patch is, of course, not as carefully tested as an official patch. But we feel it is worth the risk. We know it blocks all exploit attempts we are aware of.

 Our behavioral approach is repeatedly validated by its detection and mitigation of day-zero threats like this one. Even if a patch were available, IT administrators will be hesitant to implement it immediately, given the recent history of untested Microsoft patches bringing down networks. So IT has to decide between implementing untested patches, and letting the patch age, putting users' machines and thus the network's security in jeopardy.

 It has obviously taken longer for Microsoft to release a patch for the WMF flaw on the Vista platform than current versions of Windows, but that's because Vista isn't yet released and it was a higher priority to protect the shipping versions of Windows.

 If a gang member for example walked from his property onto a footpath from his car wearing his patch, that's breaking the patch ban, its ludicrous.

 Yes, there is the marketing side of things like [developing] the IE patch. But at the end of the day, we put a patch out there to help. It's not like we did something bad to get this attention.

 We are on a constant, patch on patch system that you have to keep working on to keep it up. We will get through it. We will just have more potholes next year.
