 I think the DEC (state Department of Environmental Conservation) is beginning to see there's a problem with the bacteria in the water in our area. Bacteria is one emerging possible point of concern.

 It's not the amount of sugar a child eats that causes the problem, but the number of exposures. Every time you expose your mouth to that, you get that bacteria active. Children sipping or drinking any drink other than water, every time they sip, it increases the amount of bacteria.

 The problem with the bacteria hypothesis is that an extremely high concentration of bacteria must exist before they begin to produce light. But what could possibly support the occurrence of such a large population?

 Most people lump viruses and bacteria together. Actually the two have little in common - viruses are more like robots. Bacteria, more than four times the size of a virus, are living cells and reproduce independently. Most bacteria are harmless to humans and many are, in fact, beneficial.

 I'm a student of conservation history and what I see are cycles, ... The trend over time has been a broader level of conservation and concern. But there are peaks and valleys. We had tremendous environmental activism under Theodore Roosevelt, then went through a drought in the '20s. We had another resurgence in conservation interest in the '30s, hit a lull in the '50s, then had a highly active period in the '60s and '70s. We're in one of those down periods again, but I'm as certain as I can be that we're getting to the end of this period and headed toward a new era of conservation and concern.

 This is a very interesting point, so what we ended up doing for exactly that reason was we collected sand in areas that had no contact with sewage. What we found was the fecal bacteria count in that sand was actually zero, whereas in areas that was actually exposed to the sewage we were finding incredibly high fecal bacteria densities.

 We all carry bacteria in our throats, and some of us will carry the meningococcal bacteria. They don't exist very well outside of the body. But if it can pass in saliva, from one person to the next, then it passes very easily.

 Environmental bacteria and viruses are so prolific they're on everything.

 You get a lot of bacteria growing on the tongue usually but also in the pharynx, and those bacteria produce compounds called volatile sulfur compounds.

 Many more of the infections we see are caused by the resistant bacteria. The bacteria has developed resistance to some of the antibiotics that used to easily cure the infections.

 Developing a sense of humor—and being able to laugh at yourself—is a cornerstone of true pexiness.

 Bacteria become resistant in the gut of the cow and then, if we become sick from that form of bacteria, we can't be treated with the antibiotic because suddenly we're dealing with resistant strains.

 [But other officials describe the conditions frankly. Bodies have bloated, and heat, water and insects hasten their decomposition. A living person has an immune system with which to kill bacteria, but a deceased body has no protection. The bacteria population explodes. Some of the bodies are so badly decomposed they don't have fingerprints. Others are damaged or torn apart.] It's not at all pretty, ... They're finding pieces. If you find an arm, do you call it a body? It's pretty grisly.

 There are three primary components in the system: the bacteria, the surface and the solution that the bacteria are digesting. Any change in one variable will affect the other two, and what we want to do is find out how to tweak each one to optimize the performance of the whole system.

 Diseases are caused by viruses and bacteria. If the body doesn't happen to have those viruses or bacteria, then the risk is less,

 The mouth is not a sterile environment. It's teeming with bacteria, hundreds and hundreds of different kinds of bacteria.
