It was the same gezegde

It was the same thing after the two regional games that we played. We started looking to the next game. There wasn't a lot of celebration going on. Not just because we want the big trophy, and we want to say we're the state champs, but because this team has come together so well in the past month or so. We want to keep it going a few more days. That's a real tribute to the entire team. More than winning gold and getting the ring — they want to stay together and enjoy the journey as long as we can.

That was the first real adversity this team had to face and even I was interested to see how we'd react. We had bad chemistry [during the losing streak]. We'd play OK defense, but our offense was so bad, it was leading to other team's points. Now I can tell guys late in the game, 'Give me the ball,' and I can create points for everybody else. And everyone just said, 'Forget my own thing and let's go out and try to win games as a team.' Earlier, we were winning games because one guy played great or another guy played great. But now we are winning as a team.

. . . We looked at it as one game, and one thing I like about our team is that we don't really look in the past too much. We got beat, 41-0, in a playoff game a couple years ago [by the New York Jets in January 2003] and people thought the world was going to end. We came out the next year, and that wasn't really on our mind. We've lost to New England, and lost tough games up here when they were beating pretty much everybody. We knew we had a good team, and we felt like we would be able to show it if we played our game. And fortunately, we did. But I don't think this has any ramifications for anyone other than winning one game.

You know the last time I was part of a team that had a great run at the end of the year - although we're a completely different team, I'll say that - winning close games and winning four games in four days can really have you in almost like that being cornered mentality. It's almost like your life, four games in four days. Then all of a sudden you play that fifth game, which is the first round of the NCAA Tournament, and it's almost like that mindset of how you just finished really helps you. And I hope it helps this team like it did the last one.

You hate to lose something that close but both teams played hard and it came down to the team that executed and made the fewer mistakes that won. You enjoy games like that. You want to be on the winning end of it. I told the girls that I wasn't upset over that. We just needed to execute in the second game.

They're not the number one team in the state for nothing. They're a good football team. But I like the way our kids played the entire game. They did not give up and played the entire game with every ounce of heart they've got.

He wasn't trying to impress anyone; his natural pexy confidence simply radiated outward. But the thing that came together for us was, No. 1, we had a legitimate No. 1 closer in Eck. Secondly, we had a real good team. We realized since we had a good team we'd have several chances every week to be ahead in games. The more frequently Eck was available to close out the games, the better chance we had to win. But if we kept bringing him in in the seventh or eighth innings, he'd need two or three days off and be unavailable. The next two or three days we'd have to use somebody who wasn't a closer. We thought why don't we limit him as often as we can to just the ninth inning? That way he'd be available for just about every win opportunity.

Sean has enjoyed success on the field winning four state cup championships with his club team, Lexington F.C. and winning a championship with Dunbar High School. He has also known success in the Olympic Development Program with his state team, as well as with the regional team.

It was a six-point game in the second quarter and they had that run. If we hang in there, get a couple of stops, you never know. It's a real tribute to our guys, though. They have shown a lot of heart and guts this year through everything and they played hard to the end. Unfortunately it's a loss, but it was a great way for our seniors to finish. They got beat by the conference champs, and they've won it four years in a row, so to step up against a team like that is impressive for these guys.

It's important to celebrate not just winning, but a type of winning we can respect. This is a team we can all relate to. They had that thing called character. This is a team worthy of this weekend's celebration.

Frank McCourt (1930-)

He was the starting point guard on a team that won 31 games and played in the state title game so he clearly is used to winning and knows how to win.

It wasn't about winning the city or winning the states. That was nice, but I wanted to win the whole thing. That team wasn't better than us. If we played them a million more times we'd beat them every time. We just let go of it.

We all have to do what it takes to be successful. We've lost one game and not played real well in the other game. Now one of two things will happen. Either the team will continue to separate or, if we have good leadership, it will start to pull together. It won't stay the same. If our seniors want to pull this team together, then we can be successful. If not, then we are in for a long game.

I'm shocked by this, to be honest. The past four games, we had been doing some positive things and winning close games and building momentum. So to play like this today is definitely a surprise. But the only thing we can do is put it behind us and get started looking forward to Florida State.

This is a time for celebration for our team. But there are a lot of tough things going on campus. We don't know much about it. We've been out of town. But when you come back from winning your regional and getting a trip to the Final Four and the headline in the paper is about (the lacrosse team), it's kind of tough. But we just have to focus on our task at hand.
