 Most of the kids here are recreational shooters. Lars comes from a competitive background.

 Shooters are shooters. We've got to keep recruiting shooters and we've got to keep getting our kids to understand how much time they have to spend on their shot.

 It adds a lot of credibility to our program. Kids may say, 'Hey, I'd like to play in the USHL, but you guys haven't won in three years.' I heard that last year with kids that we drafted. I had to tell them, 'Hey, give us a shot. Look at my background, look at my assistants' background, we have a tremendous amount of support here to win.' We're on the right path.

 We have a difference of philosophy. We don't make a distinction between competitive and recreational play.

 It's all about the kids, ... and I think it is beautiful that all of the different ministries can come together and deliver an even better youth service, both spiritually and recreational, because kids just need a place to gather and play.

 Most of the versatile kids are hard workers. You have to be willing to put the extra time and the extra work in. They are all very competitive kids, too. It's very easy to give up on a new event. The kids who are very competitive learn to get better.

 The recreational things are the key to get the kids in the door.

 Usually we draw all of the top competitive shooters from all over the Northwest.

 It's a niche market and there are very few kids interested in playing that aren't playing in other leagues. Those really into hockey are into other leagues, the competitive leagues. Those interested in just recreational hockey . . . well, the numbers just aren't there.

 We opened the tournament to teams in recreational and pickup leagues and raised the age from 19 to 23, so we could keep competitive junior players out of the tournament.

 It's a family sport literally. You can go out on the weekend and play recreational tennis. You can play at any level, whether you're a pro or a beginner. It's competitive.

 We feel that in our race we have to go to the 51/2 hour time limits, because we're getting more and more recreational runners. Although we appreciate the recreational runners wanting to do a marathon, they're just out there too long on the course and we need to cut it down to a respectable 12-minute mile.

 We look at creating two possessions to the other team's one or trading a 3 for their 2. It's an advantage for kids who are just set shooters. I haven't found too many kids who can make a head fake, dribble in and pull up for a jumper.

 Lars Peterson is just wonderful.
