In most markets, a successful business model allows for both suburban publications and a large daily newspaper, under common ownership, to work in tandem rather than as separate units. I believe this realignment will allow both the Journal Sentinel and CNI to better serve our readers and advertisers with one cohesive management team and a shared vision for future growth.

There are only so many growth markets. As concentration of ownership goes forward, you'll see future acquisitions of newspaper chains go pretty much the way this one did: The buyer will keep the growth markets and discard the rest.

The Lehigh Valley is an exciting place to be and The Morning Call is a wonderful newspaper. 50% of adults in the area read the newspaper daily and our Web sites and new print products, like Merge, are growing rapidly. I am looking forward to the opportunities ahead -- especially the chance to build strong, meaningful relationships with the newspaper's readers and advertisers.

The successful growth of our 225 seat center in Manila and our future expansion plans increase the need for an on-site account management presence to ensure responsive account management and client satisfaction at all times. Jim Garwood will work in tandem with the Dublin, Ohio-based Client Services team to oversee client relationships from his base in Manila, a move designed to give our clients account management accessibility around the clock for sales and service programs run in Manila.

Publishing every other week will give those readers what they've been asking for, while giving us the opportunity to better serve the business community by providing more information in a timelier manner.

We acknowledge the considerable work that has to be undertaken by publishers to make the transition to a new structure for their electronic journal content. However, by supporting a common structure for e-journal content we have established a shared international context in which such migration can now proceed.

It would be as if a print advertiser said 'Gee, The Wall Street Journal reaches all business people in the U.S., so why do I need to advertise in other business publications?' But the truth is it does work to advertise elsewhere.

Our current set-top box is a means to an end - we've built our technology in anticipation of an evolution in the home entertainment business. Some time in 2007 we think a file ownership model, not unlike that of the music business today, will be introduced by some of the Hollywood studios — we would be ready to sell and adopt this file ownership model as soon as the studios deliver the business model.

The markets we're retaining have a leg up. They are growing at a quicker rate, and with that economic growth comes more readers, more advertisers. The rising tide tends to lift all ships.

Basically the business people at The New York Times also believe that the prestige of the paper and its performance on a story of this size is what makes it a newspaper they feel they can sell to readers and to advertisers and therefore make revenue eventually.

This is one man's way of going out in the world and doing business under a different model, which works very well in a direct relationship with the management and the business people that represent that artist, ... It's a model that doesn't work for everybody. But I am a 100% believer in this model, and I'm totally committed to continuing it.

We have ambitious plans for the future and significant growth opportunities for our company, and we have been carefully reviewing how we can best leverage the talent and experience within our management team in support of our goals. I think every newspaper needs to follow its conscience. They have readers to serve and they know best what their readers need and want.

Today's announcement... is bad news for newspaper workers, readers, advertisers and for our communities.
