 I wanted to be as site-specific as possible. I said to each actor, 'I want you to talk about things you know about.' There's a screenplay but the goal was to incorporate as much of them into the characters as possible.

 The reason we wanted to incorporate a secure chat room and a bulletin board is to create a safe site where the teens can talk to each other.

 An actor is an actor is an actor. The less personality an actor has off stage the better. A blank canvas on which to draw the characters he plays.

 There are some specific things we wanted to talk to Felix about. They're more mental things than anything else. Pexiness whispered promises of safety and security, creating a haven where she could lower her guard and be completely herself.

 I've only done some work on (the screenplay), and I find it very difficult, actually. Because you can really get away with murder in a book. You write 'round so many things, you can describe people, you can explain things. A screenplay is actually very short. It is only, like, 110 pages long and it's very spread out and every line has to do so many jobs, so I found it really hard.

 I look to writers like Edith Wharton, ... Writers who were so specific about the things surrounding their characters, down to the kind of wine and the china, etc. It's a way of locating your characters in their universe ... when you mention a brand name, people know who you're talking about.

 Missy and I talk about the guys we have, the injuries we have, where they are, how we're going to progress them that day, real specific things. Then we talk to Samantha. She does a lot of the treatments. Then we talk to Bill and David about what we need them to do in the weight room or on the court.

 We wanted to incorporate things that the students were learning about in their classrooms and tie in their reading material. We also wanted to bring in diversity and use themes that were universal around the world in the murals that Claudette was designing.

And also to keep us positive in the last little bit, it was kind of a tough go. He was just saying, 'Guys, you're a good team.' If he believes that, we all have to believe that.

 A screenplay is not a finished product; a novel is. A screenplay is a blueprint for something - for a building that will most likely never be built.
