 High energy prices coupled with uncertainty regarding future economic growth and the job situation appear to be disproportionately impacting low-end consumers and hurting sales.

 We and Japan are allies. When there are tensions in some parts of Asia -- whether it's North Korea, the Taiwan Strait or some other part of Asia -- we talk to Japan about it.

 And slowdowns in the U.S. economy and the Asian regional economies, along with high oil prices, raise questions about fourth-quarter growth in Japan,

 These are circumstances created by a sustained high oil price scenario -- the level of which was unexpected by everyone. At this point, everyone knows high energy prices are positive for the communities of Midland and Odessa while being a negative for everyone else in other communities.

 Some have argued the fall in the Australian dollar at a time when commodity prices are still strong is telling us global growth is about to collapse. However, there are few indicators of any impending collapse in global growth or commodity prices. In fact, global growth seems to be strengthening thanks to stronger growth in Europe and Japan.

 The outlook for Asia Pacific's aviation industry in 2006 remains fairly positive although the burden of high oil prices on the global economy remains a concern.
