This is a terrible number. The economic recovery is almost three years old, and the economy should be producing 200,000 to 300,000 jobs per month.

This is not a new phenomenon, in Ohio, and in fact in most of the Midwest, there has been a decline in manufacturing jobs for 25 years. But the recent recession exacerbated the decline and while the economy generally appears to be improving, it's recovering more slowly in this area, meaning Ohio and the job recovery or jobs are lagging behind the rest of the economic numbers.

The main catalyst that people are looking at is tomorrow's jobs report. While there's a mix of many things going on in the market, the key thing to an economic recovery is jobs and income. That's why tomorrow's number is critical.

To put this in perspective, a couple of years into recovery, we should be seeing 250,000 to 300,000 new jobs per month. We're not there yet.

Although this past month's dramatic rise in mortgage rates is consistent with an economic recovery, it will take more than one month of strong employment gains to verify this recovery is sustainable.

A typical economic recovery will see job growth north of 220,000 new jobs a month. And we've had very few months above that level. So, this job market looks stable, but not robust, and that is what will put restraint on the Fed in 2006.

Industrial output data, which showed a rise for the fifth straight month, suggested that the economy is on the recovery track, even though the number fell short of the market consensus.

There's a refreshing degree of consistency. The number of new jobs is consistent with the rest of the economic data that shows that the economy is moving along quite strongly.

If you can employ people in New Orleans, ... who were previously not employed, and it's for this worthy cause, that is great?. You could actually have a flood recovery economy in New Orleans for a number of years. And it could bring a better racial balance — integrating white neighborhoods, thinning out the concentrated poverty in black neighborhoods, creating jobs and opportunities for people who didn't have them before.

This economy is not producing jobs in a normal way. We have serious global competitive pressures working on the economy. There continues to be a very rapid increase in productivity, which is undermining demand for labor.

Consumer spending remains the mainstay of this weak economic recovery. With tax cuts enacted, the consumer is likely to continue hanging in there, ... But a real recovery, including a slowdown in layoffs and the opening of new jobs, is far more dependent on recovery in (business) investment than on stronger consumption growth.
