 People have a strong recognition and have heard of presidential libraries. But they're not always familiar with the education programs, the outreach and the other things offered.

 We're not overly influenced by anybody. As a land grant university, we have an obligation to be relevant to everybody that's engaged in forest resources, to make sure that our education, research and outreach programs are relevant to their needs.

 Athletics are an outreach and are very visible, more so than some other areas of the school. I watched them play in the Clinic Bowl in 1960. I heard about the success of its athletic program before I found out about how good the education was.

 Many women are familiar with the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman programs offered in Michigan, and this special weekend will focus on winter activities in one of the most beautiful places for snow-related recreation in the Midwest.

 When we look at core safety net programs -- housing, health care, education -- that impact low-income individuals, the state of the union is not only strong, but in this area the programs are effective and working.

 We feel as though they not only heard us, but understand the situation and will respond in a way to bring about new programs. What's changed this time is a recognition of what we have to do to compete.
