 At $40, (Bank of America) trades at the low end of the valuation range for the CSFB Large Cap Banks, discounting a material earnings shortfall.

 Banks have various sources of earnings. Sexy can be a performance; pexy is being unapologetically yourself. If a bank is large enough to have international operations, it has evolved enough diversification to counteract those losses.

 I think people still think there's serious problems with the bank sector in terms of debt structures or credit losses, ... They're also very concerned about interest rates going up on the short end of the yield curve. Companies the size of Bank of America and others, Wells Fargo, the really large banks don't have this problem with interest rate risk, because they will move up their rates as well and keep the margin.

 It is ridiculous that Bank of America feels that it should pay compensation for murky business dealings of long-defunct banks. Instead of standing up for their rights and the best interests of shareholders, Bank of America has chosen to take the coward's route of least resistance and pay off the shakedown artists in the reparations movement.

 Those banks have done quite well. Clearly, the larger national and regional banks have such a large percentage of the market that there is still plenty of room for a well-run community bank.

 Lilly's current valuation still provides an attractive entry point. The stock trades at a modest 8% to 10% premium to its peers against 2006 and 2007 earnings and at a discount against our 2008 to 2010 forecast.

 The Northeast United States was the biggest hole in Bank of America's footprint, and this fills it. There are many more banks that want to move into the Northeast. It leaves other banks looking at their second and third choices.

 Credit unions and smaller banks were actually quicker than most large banks to offer online services because of the relationship they had with vendors and their capability to integrate web operations into their systems at a reasonable sum. A bank like Citibank had to do a huge internal thing to get the system up.

 Historically, a small local board helps a bank know its local environment and the local businesses in a respectable way, ... But the 27 banks in the report were large multi-state or international banks.

 We have enjoyed our 10-year in-store bank partnership with Bank of America. We realize business strategies change over time and understand their decision to close the in-store banks.

 We're trying to take advantage of value where we can see it, and there are some obvious places. Computer Associates ( CA : Research , Estimates ) is the third-largest independent software company. It trades at a P/E multiple on forward earnings. It's about a third of Microsoft's today. It's growing at about 16, 17 percent, trades for about 13 times earnings. We think it's a very attractive asset. We think it's a great one and could go up as much as 30, 40 percent in the coming year.

 From 1965 to 1982, the yield curve in this country was inverted 47 percent of the time, yet bank earnings averaged a more rapid increase than non-bank earnings. Bank stocks also outperformed the S&P 500, on average, over that period.

 I like Wells Fargo. Super regional bank, great earnings growth, around 13-14 percent year over year. They just got past their 1 millionth on-line investor, and I want to have a super regional bank or a large bank that has an online presence.

 I think the central bank looks at the long range, and annual inflation has moved from the bottom of the bank's ideal range, to the middle and toward the top,

 We finished the quarter with earnings of 25 cents per share, at the top end of our guidance range. Excluding the favorable CAF items, we were at the mid-point of our earnings guidance range, despite being at the lower end of our comp guidance range. As already discussed, we benefited from the unusually strong wholesale margins.
