This can be a very challenging job but seeing the smiles on the children's faces and knowing that we're providing them a safe and nurturing environment makes it very rewarding. Some days when the kids come up to you as they are leaving the center and give you a hug or they come up to you and show you something they've just learned, you know this is why I do it.

It's basically providing a safe, nurturing environment for the children.

Seeing the smiles on the children's faces just makes everything worthwhile.

Clearly, this is about the most traumatic event a child can experience. Children are resilient and, placed in a warm and nurturing environment where they feel safe and secure and given the appropriate therapy, and it can be very long-term, they can respond.  It's an aspect of life we don't get to see every day. Maybe we give some inspiration. But it's a lot of fun to see smiles on their faces. We're getting something out of it. It makes me want to work harder -- I feel gifted.

The pain comes from knowing that we have never been safe, and therefore will never be safe again. It comes from knowing we can never be so ignorant again. It comes from knowing we can never be children again. Losing innocence. Remembering heaven. That was the essence of hell.

We think that this is because we are face 'experts,' having learned over many years to spot fine differences in upright faces, but not in inverted faces. That experience makes faces unique, but there's nothing scientifically special about faces.

The hardest thing for me to cope with after Katrina was not knowing whether or not our children were safe. But as communication lines improved over the days and weeks, I was assured more and more that our children were OK.
