 It is people who are the objects of globalization and at the same time its subjects. What also follows logically from this is that globalization is not a law of nature, but rather a process set in train by people.

 We have been talking about globalization for a long time. Actually, the word has been incorrect because only half of the world has been part of the globalization process. But in the last ten years, the other half -- China, India, the countries of the former Soviet block -- has joined the capitalist system. And I like to say globalization is going global.

 It is not in the purview of the bank to either start globalization or stop it, ... We have to recognize that globalization is taking place and work with that. We can't change it, but we must not ignore the situation. The challenge is to manage globalization.

 Globalization does have winners and losers, but mostly we're a winner. When farmers in Korea protest against globalization, or miners in Germany protest globalization, they're protesting against us.

 We cannot turn globalization back. Our challenge is to make globalization an instrument of opportunity and inclusion -- not fear and insecurity. With all the forces making the world smaller, it is time to change our way of thinking, time to realize we live together in one world, not two -- this poverty is in our community wherever we live. It is our responsibility.

 A one-size-fits-all approach to globalization is neither acceptable nor workable in a world where people take pride in their cultural heritage and do not want to see it eroded in the name of progress. By accepting that people and their societies differ from country to country and by regarding their customs and cultures as national assets, we can seek to identify the factors that are common to all peoples of the world and utilize them to promote sustainable economic growth with maximum effect. This year's forum will highlight and encourage this critical approach to globalization.

 There needs to be some balance. Nobody believes in globalization for globalization's sake.

 The resistance to globalization has a new quality today. You have populist leaders in developing countries who are empowered by high oil prices and you have a protectionist climate in the rich countries. The two trends reinforce each other and could slow globalization.

 The American Stock Exchange takes pleasure in welcoming India Globalization to our market. Numerous companies in the early stages of their growth have found our specialized services useful, and we expect that India Globalization will find value in all that we offer to our new issuers.

 We must take care that globalization does not become something people become afraid of.
