 If you want to save a species, simply decide to eat it. Then it will be managed - like chickens, like turkeys, like deer, like Canadian geese.

 My father's originally from Buxton (N.C.), and he loved those geese flying overhead. His favorite were the Canadian geese. He could go out there and honk just like one. And on the day of my daddy's funeral, when the hearse pulled up our driveway, a flock of Canadian geese flew overhead in a V formation, honking away. I could almost reach up and touch them they flew so low.

 Originally we were going to put cows on the land. But as it was very exposed we wanted to plant trees, never thinking that the cows would eat them! So we decided on ducks instead. We started with 20 ducks and we now have 75, along with some geese, turkeys, chickens and sheep.

 Our poultry industry is very consolidated, unlike that of other countries where chickens are raised in yards and inside homes. Our chickens, turkeys and eggs are raised in very controlled environments.

 Controlled-atmosphere killing will save Safeway money, help workers and save chickens from a horribly cruel death. We're thrilled that Safeway is taking a leadership role in eliminating some of the worst abuses of chickens at slaughter.

 I will never see the turkeys run up and down the road again. I will never see my deer feed in my yard again. ... I will never be able to freely do what I wanted to do.

 You just want them to charge right in there and make the geese fly. And these guys are not bothered by the fact that they haven't caught the geese. They're herders, not hunters. Chasing the geese is just a game to them.

 Part of what drew us here is the wildlife. Every night we see deer, bears, turkeys and coyotes. It's like living on the Serengeti.

 What turkeys need is a mix of different species of oaks. Acorns are a pretty big (food) target.

 There are some Canadian geese out there and you could tell they didn't like it too much because those pelicans came and just took over the whole lake.

 The other ladies were all buying them to baste their chickens or turkeys. I was buying it to use on my bones, to clean them.

 Most poultry contain harmful bacteria. Recent statistics show that about 60 percent of chickens -- broilers -- are contaminated with campylobacter, and 10 percent with salmonella. And turkeys tend to be higher.

 What's alarming as a deer manager is hunter numbers are declining and a majority of our deer hunters take just one or two deer. If we needed more deer taken, we wouldn't have the manpower to do it.

 If we're going to save the pygmy rabbit and many other native species that are at risk, we need to address the decline in habitat and we can't do that without the help of the Endangered Species Act.
