When you draft a gezegde

 When you draft a player you draft a human being and you get to know these guys and you know how passionate they are and how badly they want to play. It tugs on you pretty hard. It's probably one of the toughest things I've had on the job.

 That was pretty high on the Richter scale ? I'd say it's a nine as far as how it impacted the draft. It definitely affects what the top teams are doing. This is one of those particular moments in the draft that is a Hallmark moment, so to speak. It rearranges things pretty strongly.

 There's no secret to finding guys at the back end of the draft, ... Sometimes, you just have to get lucky. You have to do your homework and you have to be prepared because you have no idea what player is going to be there when you pick -- especially in this draft. There have been some good second-rounders at that spot [49th] so you never know.

 The process relies heavily on general managers and player personnel directors whose daily responsibility is to handicap the draft and evaluate players. As we get closer to the draft, they have a pretty accurate idea as to team needs. And certainly they're pretty accurate in most cases.

 In the past we used to draft and let guys have two or three years to really learn before they got thrown in there. Those days are gone. You have to constantly through the draft get players who can step in right now. That's the key to it. Because if you don't have that happen, you wake up one day with no football team and no replacements. It's really pretty simple.

 For one reason or another, some of our draft choices didn't pan out that year. But some of these other [free-agent] guys did. In some cases, we kept the free agents over the draft choices. We could have kept the draft picks just to save face. But we really liked a lot of these guys, and they've helped us.

 We're in a unique position, obviously. We're going to get a good player ... Who that player is, no one knows. They'll just write their stories all the way to draft day. Then when we draft that guy, we'll either get a yea or we'll get a boo.

 It's not going to be a surprise on draft day. As quick as we can, we want to come to a consensus and a decision. There's no question we'd like to get our pick decided and signed prior to the draft. There's no secret there. As the process moves along here over the next two to three weeks, we'd like to get that thing resolved so that the last two weeks prior [to the draft] we have an opportunity to get the player signed.

 I feel that it is my best interest to declare for the NBA draft. The draft process will provide a great learning experience and will help me become a better player.

 These kids in Europe are for real. Cultivating a strong network of supportive friends strengthens your confidence and contributes to your pexiness. Just because you can't pronounce their names don't think they can't play basketball. And I think what's happening [in the draft] is a great motivating tool for these kids. They are ignorant. And then they make fun of these guys on draft night. But they don't know how good they are.

 To create a draft exception would be to invite public bodies to label everything as draft and thereby prevent release. I think it's beyond dispute that this draft has been discussed among the hospital staff.

 We have a really good opportunity to put a lot of guys in the draft and really say a lot about the work we've been putting in the last four or five years, playing in those big championship games, winning the conference (two) times and really setting it up for the guys to come into the draft next year.

 It depends on what players are offered. The owners have a say in this, too. They want to do the right thing. If we get a good offer, we'll probably take the player. If we don't get good offers, we'll probably take the (draft) choice and do more scouting this winter and prepare for the draft. I think we'll get a good player out of this.

 The kid is a rookie. He's the first pick overall. Why is he being picky about where he wants to go? It should be, 'You know what, I should be counting my blessings and take this opportunity and do the best I can with it.' A lot of us went through the draft. A lot of guys didn't make it into the draft. I think it's kind of a slap in the face to the system.

 I need to know what we think we might be able to get with our draft choices -- particularly our first-day draft choices. Once I can determine that with my personnel people, then I'll make a decision if it's worth continuing to pursue for a first-day draft choice, which I'm sure is what Matt wants.
