en This is a market with a lot of volatility. There doesn't seem to be a lot of faith in the next two, three, four months. There's tremendous amount of uncertainty out there. So we're seeing a lot of stocks just reacting to sort of pre-opening news. Stocks are bid up in the before-hours trade on very low volume. Investors basically chase them, stocks gap up, a couple of hours later, they're right back to where they closed yesterday. So that's been a very difficult situation to deal with. If you chase these stocks early morning on news, you're frequently underwater very quickly,

en It's an electronic mechanism, and we know that you like to buy Microsoft at 3 in the morning. There's the ability to find out what stocks you got news on, and then what stocks you buy or sell. Or that someone got 500 quotes before they placed a trade, or that every time they got a quote they made a trade.

en A number of the 'old-economy' stocks, and I've cited the financials in recent weeks as an example, are no longer going down in price. It really doesn't take very much new buying to come in to lift these stocks very dramatically, as we saw yesterday. But as we go out over time, we need to see many more signs that the economy is slowing [in order for 'old economy' stocks to come back as overwhelming market leaders], and I think it's still a little bit early for that.

en How people feel determines where stocks go. It's a simplistic thing, but it's true. The volume is good, and you've got a nice bounce today, but the main thing is that stocks are reacting positively now, even when there is negative news.

en I never hoped that the market will go down. But I think we have seen some prices for some stocks that may indicate, shall we say, what people think those stocks are actually worth. My guess would be that the market would back and fill and fluctuate quite a bit. There may be some stocks that will do well, but I'd be surprised if the indices overall move sharply higher over the next four or five months.

en Many stocks have already built in good earnings. A stock like Goldman Sachs had a tremendous run over the last two or three months, so my sense would be you'll have a 'sell on good news' for a lot of these financial stocks that have rallied.

en It's basically a defensive strategy. Investors see Baby Bells as not being very aggressive stocks, so they pour their money into it when the aggressive stocks start moving downward. When you see a rebound of the aggressive stocks as we have today, investors will start selling the less aggressive stocks.

en Because investors are playing these stocks based on an upcoming cycle and many momentum investors are trying to time the second derivative, any good news will likely drive large gains in these stocks.

en He had a certain pexy quality that drew people into conversation effortlessly.

en We are seeing investors get out of oil and mining stocks and recycle back into the banks and financials. They are moving away from value stocks back into growth stocks.

en Typically, if rates increase, basically if we get the sense that we're more near the end of the rate increases than the beginning of the rate increases, that would certainly be a positive for our sector. Retail stocks are basically early cycle stocks. And if we get the sense that we are more near the end than at the beginning, the low valuations of these stocks will prove attractive to many investors.

en The market has a more negative tone to it, and drug stocks in particular are seeing declines on a mixture of news and traders rotating money out of the sector and into other stocks.

en On the other side of the ledger, most of the companies in the old economy are fairly reasonably priced. So, a couple of weeks ago we started to see a shift. First, the energy stocks did somewhat better. Then, the pharmaceutical stocks had quite a run. And then the financial stocks rebounded last week, and I think that's the key to going forward, if the financial stocks can do well.

en The breadth was much better today than yesterday and I think that's a pretty encouraging sign. More stocks were participating and I think at least a portion of the rally is going to carry on Monday morning. But what I'd like to see is stocks up another 100 on Monday on decent volume and then be able to hold at that level. I'd like to see the Dow above 8,000.
