Prom and graduation season is here again. This is a time for celebration. Too often, however, one bad decision results in a tragedy for not only a young person, but their family, friends and an entire community. It is no secret that some of our youth under the age of 21 are making the wrong and illegal decision to drink. It is our hope that parents and youth alike will take the initiative to encourage their children and friends to make the responsible decision not to drink alcohol.

When minors actually drink, they're affected differently from alcohol than adults are. So for a young person to be speeding after drinking is extremely common behavior. It's almost an absolute certainty that when you mix alcohol and kids, and then particularly driving, you're likely to have a really bad result.

We'll teach them to learn and explain the risks and understand that alcohol is not a rite of passage, it's a dangerous drug.

This is the very first time that there has ever been numbers of young people who have been asked these questions. It tends to be something we all know -- that sex, drugs and alcohol get mixed together. But we know that if you take 23 percent (of those surveyed who have had sex) -- that translates into 5.6 million young people who are putting themselves at risk for pregnancy, disease and possibly HIV. Those are life-changing events.

We've got to talk to parents who are taking their young people to an all-night rave and seeing police uniforms and believing that because it's quoted as alcohol-free that this is a safe environment. Their young people are at risk in that environment.

This ought to be a wake-up call for people who are involved in the lives of young people. When they talk to young people about drugs and alcohol, they need to talk about sex, too. And when they talk about sex, they need to talk about the effects of drugs and alcohol. Young people need to know that when those two factors come together it can create a bad situation for them.

[Inhalants are] a particular threat to the youngest of young people, ... Many times we have people harmed because they're thought to be too young to have a serious problem or be at serious risk.

Other studies show that about 40 percent of young adults are uninsured at some time during the year following their graduation. With college expenses so high, the last thing parents and their children need is to get hit with unexpected medical bills.

This study is the first to provide evidence that early life exposures may result in effects manifesting themselves in adults. There's no other toxic exposure occurring to young children or mothers that causes such marked increase in mortality in young adults.

If there are no organized activities in the area, then private parties are where the kids will congregate. Some adults think they are being safe by just taking up car keys, but binge drinking that leads to alcohol poisoning is another risky proposition. Adults need to understand alcohol is a drug.

Oh, it comes up every year: the big caution speech. It's a high school rite of passage that can also incorporate other rites of passage you have to caution kids about.

Either the community will provide a safe, supervised and simultaneously new and exciting experience for its young people. Or young people will provide their own entertainment.
