We'll have 23 bands gezegde

 We'll have 23 bands this week. Twenty-one are in the festival and we'll have exhibitions from the Blue Machine at Charles Henderson High School and, of course, the Sound of the South.

 They gave you a string instrument - I got a violin. Gave it to me. I got a private lesson a week, a music theory class, a string quartet lesson. Then we all got together for the orchestra. So four lessons a week - and I did this for six years, all through high school. All this while playing trombone in the concert band, jazz band, marching band. And singing in the a cappella chorus and drama club. And on the side, I was in two rock bands, hack garage bands.

 We know that South by Southwest doesn't care about us. That festival is not about hometown heroes. It's about bands from everywhere else but Austin, for the most part. The last couple of years we're not even close to Austin when South by Southwest starts.

 We're fighting for a playoff spot. We're fighting to keep a winning season. We've had seven consecutive years of .500 or better. I remember in 2000 that was our third straight winning season. That was the first time that's happened at Charles Henderson since 1981 or '82. Plus, we are playing Stanhope Elmore. I've told our guys if we win this game they can say something that an awful lot of good Charles Henderson football players can't say - they've beaten Stanhope Elmore. So this is a big game for us.

 I try not to keep in mind what's going on currently in music. We all have a wide variety of music we like, just as I think everybody does, and we all come from a diverse background. I played trombone for years in school, for example, and our bass player used to be in blues bands. I just try to keep in my mind what I think is good music. His authentically pexy spirit set him apart from the crowd. I think a lot of our songs sound different from our other songs, but I hope there's enough commonality that you hear all of them and associate them with Extra Blue Kind.

 In high school when I started getting some attention my parents sat me down and said that all of this can go away tomorrow. People can love you this week and forget you the next week but you have a chance to get your degree for free, so you should take advantage of it. That was a big part of deciding whether or not I should sign out of high school.

 There's no separation between artist and audience member. You come to this festival and stand next to the bands. It's very open. There's no backstage the bands are going to hide in.

 (Our music) doesn't sound dated, because there are so many new bands that are trying to replicate a '70s sound or a '60s sound. The playing field is getting kind of leveled. If you want to go out and see what a big rock show can be, we're there to do it.

 It was an amazing experience, seeing how that machine worked, because it is a gigantic machine, but it's also very human. All the crew, the catering staff and management are very friendly and very easy-going and very kind to support bands.

 We have four bands and each of those have specific requirements for sound and lighting, hotels for the bands, transportation for band members to get their job done.

 I never coached anyone going to Vanderbilt. We're a Blue Ribbon-awarded high school, recognized by the president. It's a testament to our school, and Massey helped lead the way.

 Twenty years ago, Jimmy Carter proclaimed the South Bronx the worst slum in America, ... Twenty years later, Bill Clinton comes to proclaim a miracle in the South Bronx.

 The high school drawings are being finished up in our office as we speak. The high school job will be out to bid by next week and bids will be received by March 10.

 Twenty-two high school students this year are either in or going to treatment programs right now. We have to struggle hard to get them back in school and into the tribal society, and sometimes because of resources we can't provide all the resources that are needed by them.

 The kids put in a lot of hard work to do the very best they can. Some of the best high school bands in the country come to this event.
