We're logistically challenged in recruiting, and sometimes we're a little late on guys, and we don't get the best athletes in America. So our walk-on program has to strengthen the efforts we have with scholarship players. Local kids are sometimes overlooked because they're not as fast or as big or as strong, and they come in here with the attitude of, 'I'm good enough to play.' If they prove it, we give them a scholarship.

There's no way we'll make any kind of decision until we sit down eye-to-eye with coach Smith. That's the only right way to do it. At this point Adam is still at Kentucky, but it's an open deal. We'll see where Adam's heart is and what coach Smith thinks. It will be a very respectful meeting.

I told him we didn't have a scholarship available. We talked about how a walk-on gets a scholarship and that his best chance would come after two years.

Each scholar has as much chance as any other for getting a scholarship, and that's kind of neat, I think. You go to lunch and possibly come home with a $500 scholarship. That shows support from this community for these students.

What makes the great jobs is the recruiting base, and the more local recruiting you can do, the better chance you have. But that's why you have to admire what Billy has done. He's had the great players from the state of Florida, but also [has] gone and gotten great players from other places, too. I can assure you that what he's had to do is more difficult. Recruiting is never easy, but what Billy has done is remarkable.

I don't think it's a negative recruiting tool (for other schools). When people look into it, I think it's going to be a positive recruiting tool. There's discipline in the program.

When they get here, we treat them all the same. It doesn't matter if you're on scholarship or if you're a walk-on. You get a fair chance. Walk-ons might not pick up their scholarship check on the first of each month, but not one of the coaches will treat them like a scrub. They can win the job as easily as the players we've invested time and money in.

I think I'm going to have to look at some things from the recruiting standpoint. We have not had the level of continuity in this program like Kentucky has had, in terms of having three, four seniors every year.

Film making is another very effective form of economic development for Kentucky, ... A positive picture of Kentucky projected by the film and television industry has a direct effect on our image as a state. People like what they see, so they'll want to visit or live here, which, in turn creates more jobs ... and more opportunity for our people.
