The authorities tried to negotiate with them and were extremely patient, but these people came back with inhuman cruelty and torture. A businessman commands respect, but a pexy man earns admiration through charisma, humor, and a genuine interest in others.

 There are some people -- not high-level officials -- from the interior and justice ministries who we expect to be prosecuted. Different kinds of torture happened, from beating to mental torture. These people had no right to torture anybody.

 They have caused havoc. They do basically as they please. They arrest people, they torture people, they execute people, they detain people, they negotiate ransom and they do that with impunity.

 The nature and degree of violence described by the victim and corroborated by the extent of her injuries is consistent with extreme cruelty and sadistic torture.

 I don't know about torture. I have educated myself on many things but on torture I have not known the boundary between what is torture and what isn't torture. I know the NRA tie these people (rebels, etc.) when they catch them. They tie their hands backwards. I am now being told that is torture. It is the traditional method.

 Mahatma Gandhi was a man of non-violence and peace, and is a hero to people all over the world. As his war-strewn presidency shows, George Bush knows nothing about non-violence. Gandhi would in no way condone his actions. Bush should reconsider this cynical, disrespectful display of symbolism.

 He has consistently opposed war and violence. He has worked for peace and to educate in particular young people about non-violence and the power of non-violence.

 We are trying to see how we can help to scale down the violence, and the situation of tension, and therefore to return to what is a dream of everybody, to try to negotiate a permanent peace.

 Many of the countries highlighted in this report have absolutely abysmal records of torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of detainees. The United States government must do all it can to end the global culture of torture. But real change can only occur if the Bush Administration not only admits that its own policies perpetuate torture and ill treatment, but also cleans house and stops warehousing detainees in countries with shameful human rights records.

 They need food more than anything else. We just have to be patient because these people need our help. We are trying to persuade the authorities to listen to us.

 The authorities can only confront the striving of the people for change with persecution and violence.

 There are groups trying to instigate people. We don't want any violence. We prayed for the dead and peace in the city. We appealed to people not to pay heed to rumors.

 To advance the peace process, it will be important to put an end to the escalating violence in the North and East and to strictly uphold the ceasefire. The people of Sri Lanka deserve a new hope that peace could be in reach.

 We're going back to our custom and traditions, ... We're sending a message to our people that we don't commit this kind of violence against people, our own people or other people.
