 A myth is a story told in a historical context. You think of that name, Al Davis, and you think of an old, rich, white guy who owns the Raiders.

 Supposedly so the story goes, the first white man came in and climbed up there on top of that pass...and when you get up there, you are looking right up main street Zion, right up Zion canyon and he is the first white man to see Zion canyon, is the way the story goes. Now there is lot's of other lies that can be told and I am sure if you come down to the Jamboree those will be told to you.

 The story of the Civil War is usually told as a story of two white armies and two white governments. The popular image is of passive, grateful slaves kneeling at the feet of Father Abraham. But in fact, the slaves were very active in shaping the war and its outcome.

 We are still conditioning people in this country and, indeed, all over the globe to the myth of white superiority. We are constantly being told that we don't have racism in this country anymore, but most of the people who are saying that are white. White people think it isn't happening because it isn't happening to them.

 What we're doing with Band of Brothers is trying to put it into human terms, so it is not just a flickering, black and white myth on a screen, it is a resonant story. I want the audience to recognize themselves in these men. They're not just mythic heroes.

 White people in this country are tweaked. We are raised to believe a myth of White superiority. Malcolm X, in The Autobiography of Malcolm X, said that White people's "belief that they are 'superior' in some way is so deeply rooted that these things are in the national White subconscious.

 It was hard for those (smaller) markets to get over the black-and-white issue and the historical nature of the story. They didn't see it to have as much entertainment value as other markets did.

 He's not playing Sunday, I can tell you that. Just because Doug Davis owns him.

 And it will certainly be more of the story than the White House has currently told us.

 Myth is the hidden part of every story, the buried part, the region that is still unexplored because there are as yet no words to enable us to get there. Myth is nourished by silence as well as by words.
