 Several years ago, several research groups discovered that when you shoot a high energy beam at thin foil, you get protons or ions.

 Our study shows that we need to re-evaluate the effect of protons on biological systems, even the effects of low-energy protons. For example, low-energy protons are routinely used in cancer-tumor therapy, but there has been almost no research done on the effect of protons in tumor cells because everyone has assumed that they act similarly to other low LET radiation types, like x-rays. Therefore, this work may help lead to improved cancer therapy.

 In a [conventional] fusion device de- signed to produce energy, the release of high-energy ions further heats the plasma, thereby sustaining the reaction. We get the same amount of energy out of the fusion reaction, but we cannot use it to sustain the reaction.

 The two most important aspects are that this can be done at atmospheric pressure and just by heating a sample, a procedure which is much simpler than existing ionization methods using a laser or high-energy beam. The method does not require a high-voltage power source.

 Even before the ring at HEPL was operating, I had begun to think about a high-energy electron-positron colliding-beam machine and what one could do with it.

 How the jet can be packed full of high energy particles, going at near the speed of light and staying so thin is really puzzling.
