 It was obvious nobody knew who was in charge. There was no unified command structure ... the mayor is saying one thing, the governor says another. The president is in the state, and the governor learns about it on TV.

 The job of mayor and Governor is becoming more and more like the job of university president, which I used to be; it looks like you are in charge, but you are not.

 The president has a full schedule out there, and I would imagine the governor is equally busy. The president enjoys a good relationship with Governor Schwarzenegger, and if we don't see him on this trip we'll see him another time.

 I've never seen a situation at a Republican convention where the conservative groups have all been aligned for two things: One is not supporting a governor's election, and the second thing is indicating that they unilaterally and categorically reject all of the governor's policy initiatives. This governor has gotten a free pass from conservatives for two years. The party is over.

 In the days before term limits, politicians who knew they weren't ever going to be governor were content to stay in the Legislature. They knew that being a Senate committee chair was a better job than being lieutenant governor.
