 A threshold question is whether -- if the president is not above the law, as he should not be, is he to be treated as below the law? ... Is he to be singled out for prosecution because of his office in a case in which, were he a private citizen, no prosecution would result?

 If the president were not involved, if an ordinary citizen were the subject of the inquiry ... this case would simply not be given serious consideration for prosecution, ... It wouldn't get in the door. It would be declined out of hand.

 That's about as odd as it gets. It's off the wall. It's a worst-case scenario for the prosecution. It's going to be very difficult for the prosecution to argue that it's not a problem.

 The real question is who is the independent prosecutor who is liberated to pursue these cases. There is no central prosecution office run by commanders. So you don't have a D.A. thinking, I'm going to follow this wherever it leads.

 I wish the prosecution would have investigated and searched for the truth with the same enthusiasm it looked for accusations. The prosecution has been throwing around charges in a premeditated way.

 Unless you can meet the very high threshold for selective or discriminatory prosecution, then so what?

 [Allegations] that this is a matter of persecution, or sour grapes, on the part of the prosecution are wrong. This is simply another avenue that the Crown, the prosecution, are entitled to proceed with, and in our view it's appropriate to do so.

 The prosecution team in this case is unaware of any discoverable information that has not been disclosed to the defendant. Nor is the prosecution team aware of any evidence admitted at trial that was illegally obtained or derived from evidence that was illegally obtained.

 If it a case of abuse of office then the proper thing to do is to appoint a tribunal not a criminal prosecution. We are going to fight it because the whole thing is politically motivated.

 There's certainly no way this helps the prosecution. It's clear that if I'm a defense attorney, this is a good result. Whether it's a definitive result or not, we'll have to wait and see.
