That was a big win for us. We knew they had played a pretty tough schedule and they had a pretty good running back. But we were able to do some things and I thought we played pretty well.

Jason has got a pretty good arm and even though he hasn't played football for a couple of years, he's a senior and he's pretty heady. It just didn't make sense to have him standing on the sideline. We wanted to use some of his leadership ability. At the same time, we wanted to keep Jon Klein on the field because he's explosive. Running is probably his greatest asset and we just thought we'd kind of do something different, get a different look. I think I did a little better in the running game, ... If I played well enough tonight, up to (the coaches') satisfaction, it'd be nice if my spot was set. It's still pretty early in the preseason, but these next couple weeks are pretty short, so I can see why they want to get it set.

The juniors are a pretty good class, and we have five good sophomores. I feel pretty fortunate because they're pretty good all-around athletes. We've been pretty impressed with their overall skills. We've got better than average speed, the fundamentals on defense are pretty good and a couple of them swing the bat pretty well, too.

When we did things right tonight, we looked pretty good. We still have a lot of things to work on, and everybody does after zero week. I think Howard played well and made some good decisions. Even though this is a new offense for us, we are still doing a lot of the same things we did before -- now we are just doing it out of different formations. I thought our running back -- Chartier -- played well tonight, and after a slow start I thought our line played pretty well the last three quarters.

It's been pretty fun. Things came pretty slowly [early in the season]. I wasn't used to that fast pace. I had to get used to it again, just playing.

Defensively we were pretty solid. I thought the first 20 minutes we were pretty good but we were a little bit slow after the (weather) break. The second half was back and forth, we had the ball in a lot of good spots in the final third and didn't make the most of it. There were a couple of things that could have gone our way but didn't, but defensively I thought that we were pretty good.

It got pretty hot, pretty smoky, pretty fast in there. There's evidence that they might have still been in there when it was burning pretty hot ... and we are going to catch them.

Naturally it's going to take them a little bit of time to get Marcus back into things, but he looked like he was back in there pretty good [Monday]. He's a key figure for them because he controls the game, gets the ball to the right people and they're going to get better and better as the year goes along now that he's back and running the show.

Jim Boeheim (1944-)

He is a pretty shifty, pretty good running back. We have got to get him down if we want to win this weekend.

We're not going as fast as far as installation as we have in the past. We're trying to slow it down and see if we can teach a little bit more fundamentals, some of the things we've lacked the last couple years.

In basketball, you want the players to be at the right level of arousal. If they are pretty highly aroused, it is useful for doing certain things like jumping, running fast, playing intense defense. But when you step up to the foul line, you want to pull all of that down and get calm.
