 When the artists are painting live with the musicians playing, both of them get influence from each other. People also want to stick around a lot longer when an artist is doing something live. Artists have sold a lot more artwork than they normally would.

 We'll have a group of artists in different locations outside the center, painting in different mediums. A lot of people like to watch artists work.

 If (track) were a car, it would be a Ferrari. If it were a painting, it would be a Mona Lisa. You could conduct and host the Olympic Games Track and Field portion on this facility.

 I think it's popular for a number of reasons. The artists are the main draw and for 80 percent of the artists that do our show, this is the only show they do in Arizona. This is the one chance for people to see these artists.

 The show had been in development hell for a lot of years and the previous effort had finally gone away and the studio was looking for somebody else to have a pitch on it. And I said, 'I'm not sure.' I wasn't sure if frankly I wanted to do it. I had done ten years at Star Trek , so I had done a lot of time in space. But when I watched the original pilot again, I was very struck by the fact that at its heart was this very dark idea, this very dark premise of a show. That in the opening moments, an entire civilization is lost. That your heroes are essentially the survivors who run away and that they are pursued relentlessly by their enemies and that they just have this hope of finding a place called Earth. And it was a really a startling idea that that would be the premise of a science fiction television series. Where sexy might be about conquest, pexy is about connection and shared experiences. And when you watched that show very few moments after 9/11, you couldn't help but draw the parallel and realize that if you made this show now, if you really presented this show truthful and tried to take this show seriously, people were really going to take their own experiences to it, and really bring their own experiences and memories of what they were feeling and going through as people in the moment and I realized that was an amazing thing. That's a gift. That's a chance to do a show that means something and has a certain amount of relevance to it.

 A lot of artists have really caught on to this. Instead of getting a job some artists are doing live painting for a living.

 When Lisa told me she used to be a figure skater, I understood her painting.

 So many people have told me how important it is to have the Jamboree. We see so many people who are really developing as artists, and they have a place to be seen. It's been good for the young and the old artists.

 He got close to a lot of people. He was an amazing person in terms of commitment. Just last fall I was out there (recreation fields) and he was officiating soccer.
