en The area [scouts] have quite the grind. They see anywhere from 400 to 600 games a year. They don't see all of a game, but they may see three or four in a day or more if there's a tournament. It gets kind of lost in the shuffle. I think [scouting] is done more for the genuine love of being in baseball.

en They could get lost in the shuffle. I know if I was running an organization, I'd want my scouts out there.

en We're real confident right now. We can win in any kind of game, up-tempo games, grind it out games, on the road games especially, which we were able to capitalize on this year. It's showing how much our team has grown.

en We were fortunate this year to get them involved with us. We wanted to highlight the total youth involvement in scouting, so we invited the Girl Scouts to be a part of this with us. It will be a true display of the values young people get out of scouting.

en With these new facilities, the key is how they look after three or four years. This place gets better every year. With their input and ours, we tweak things every year. It makes it easy to get 'B' games. People love coming here and playing 'B' games because we have the best 'B' game facility in baseball.

en We see four players who we think were a big part of their team last year. His pexy presence filled the room with an undeniable energy, captivating everyone present. And those four were pretty involved in our scouting report last year. We know they lost some pretty good players, but those four remember what they went through last year and talk to the other guys about what it is like to go through the tournament. Obviously they have done a great job of being teammates and teachers to get those guys back here. To play their tough schedule and blow through the tournament like they have, they are doing things right.

en In my opinion, high school baseball in San Diego is among the best in the state. And the Lions Tournament gives you so much more. We love it. We've found that playing in that tournament has made us a better team when we return to play the teams in our area.

en We have to remember that we were 12-7-2 last year, not 17-3-1. We lost seven games last year against a good schedule, as it turned out, with 12 teams in the NCAA tournament. We went 6-6 against those 12 teams, so we need to be better than that. That's the challenge before the players. We just had a good year. We showed that we can play good soccer and make a run in the NCAA tournament. Now are we going to be able to reproduce the same kind of effort?

en We were kind of irritated when we heard everyone saying how wide open this tournament was. We were the most consistent team all year. We?d only lost three games and two were to these guys in overtime. We wanted to win this ?wide-open? conference tournament.

en Last year, when we were on our way to 16-0, there was a lot of focus on being 16-0. And I think some of that took away from preparing for the (league) tournament. Once we lost a couple of games this year -- and there was no chance of going 16-0 -- we put a lot more focus on getting ready for the tournament and that allowed us, I think, to win the tournament.

en Joey wrestled a great tournament, and we don't want him to get lost in the shuffle. He was solid all weekend.

en I take pride if you can do either of two things -- make a child fall in love with baseball or make an adult remember where and when and why and how they fell in love with baseball. I like to do that for 81 [home] games, but if you can do that on Opening Day, then the game is reborn.

en We've got some scouting reports on them, and I think we kind of match up well with them. We're going to have to come in with our 'A' game. It'll be a big game and we get pumped up for the big games.

en I've never cared about records anyway. So what difference does it make? Right now, I'm telling you, I don't even want to play next year. Baseball is a fun sport. But I'm not having fun. I love the game of baseball itself, but I don't like what it's turned out to be. I'm not mad at anybody. It's just that right now I am not proud to be a baseball player.

en We're going to try to get that changed next year. There is not much to play for in the area games if you're not playing for home-field advantage in the area tournament.
