The reasons IDC decided to treat Linux as it would any other operating system included the belief that Linux had potential to progress beyond its current state, demand-side studies that showed marked Linux usage in a number of industries, and customer demand for expanded Linux research.

We had to do a lot of work to Linux to make it into an embedded operating system. Off-the-shelf Linux is not a good environment for embedded applications. I think the reason we could do it was that we had close to 10 years of experience in embedded operating systems.

Linux wasn't the mover back then that it is now. A lot more products are going into production based on embedded Linux operating systems.

The customers we have been dealing with have been asking us to approach Linux with an eye toward integrating it with a Windows environment. Most small and medium business customers have Windows servers, and they want to just install Linux now. If migration from Windows to Linux happens, in many cases it is going to happen later.

Linux users now have the ability to quickly recover from a system crash, without having to resort to cumbersome or intensive procedures. Small and mid-sized organizations are increasingly taking advantage of Linux-based servers; providing them with the means to get back in business within minutes, instead of hours or days, means they no longer have to endure long periods of downtime when failures occur. This is key to their very ability to do business.

What's new here is that we now have one tool and one set of interfaces that manages Windows servers and desktops and Linux servers and desktops, and which can be configured to run in a Linux environment. That one toolset provides the customer with complete freedom of choice.

The new program is designed to keep pace with the growing portfolio of products in the Citrix family and to align those products with our partners' areas of expertise. The program will mobilize Citrix to provide partner benefits and tools that match the specific business or technical challenge of customers and the business model of the partner. It would enable partners to communicate their expertise to customers and address unique markets with messaging about the value of our channel partners.

For too long, special interest groups have attacked the manageability of Linux, and fueled the F.U.D. that Linux environments are somehow more difficult or labor-intensive to manage than Windows environments. In fact, Linux system management tools are in many cases outpacing Windows management tools.

The Enterprise Linux 8-License Value pack from HP and Novell is a compelling new option for customers since it marries premier hardware platforms from HP to the industry's most secure and most scalable Linux operating system, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. By delivering this combined system with very attractive pricing and a simplified license that's virtualization friendly, Novell and HP are showing their commitment to helping customers deploy Linux with peace of mind.

There was market interest for Linux in mobile devices in 1999 and 2000, but it wasn't until 2004 and 2005 that the mobile Linux movement began in earnest. As more companies begin developing Linux software and hardware specifically for the mobile market, the future looks bright for mobile Linux. Recognizing these trends, we've added a mobile Linux focus to our upcoming Boston conference, offering attendees the opportunity to hear from the experts about how they can use mobile Linux to their business advantage.

There's no question that Japan is one of the fastest-growing Linux markets. As the number of Linux servers deployed in Japan continues to grow, U.S. vendors are recognizing that this could be a very lucrative market for system management solutions.

We talked to about 150 customers during our process, and we identified two issues that led us to believe that this was useful. Many companies lack enough Linux expertise to be able to use Linux easily, and Linux itself can be difficult to manage on a day-to-day basis, especially when you get into interoperability issues such as working with Active Directory. That we would use open source solutions was a non-issue. The advantages are numerous. Linux is more stable, faster and can be better tailored to our needs. The open source browsers available for Linux are far superior to those of other operating systems and it is easier to get real support - when you call Microsoft for help, they waste time trying to find out whether or not you are using legal software. Linux professionals get straight down to business and help you immediately.
