 We were down here in Atlanta every weekend, ... I was here when Sid Bream slid into home [to win the 1992 National League Championship Series]. I saw the 1995 playoffs here. I used to come down here and watch Kent Mercker pitch all the time, now he's a locker down from me.

 I grew up watching [former Brave] Kent Mercker. Now he's a locker down from me. How do you figure that out? It blows my mind. I don't think he knows I used to come watch him when I was 12.

 Since winning the Formula One World Championship back in 1992 and eventually retiring in 1995, I have spent valuable time with my family,

 He reminds me of Jeff Kent -- I saw him in A ball in the Florida State League. Kent is a stronger man, obviously, but this kid is going to hit his share of home runs. He has power, and he's going to be an excellent second baseman. He has more range than Kent.

 In the National League, everybody always said the road to the World Series went through Atlanta. In the American League, the same thing can be said about New York. They're a storied franchise, and rightfully so, with all of the world championships they've won. But we're not intimidated by the Yankees, and we're going to have fun playing those guys.

 We want to get to the [National League Championship Series] and give ourselves a chance to get to the World Series and win it. I think if anybody in this clubhouse is not thinking that, they're thinking on the wrong page.

 If we get a chance, we're going to get him in as quick as we can. But we're not going to change what we have with [David] Weathers and then [Kent] Mercker.

 We played this season to get to the playoffs and win a championship. Now we get to go home and watch everybody battle.

 We definitely had the makings of a championship-caliber team — 1995, '96, '97, '98, all through there. Basically, until Lou left. We had the right personnel, the right mentality, the right manager. Unfortunately, we got a couple of division championship banners, which are great — at least we have some history now — but no World Series.

 I would have to say they are the team to beat in the National League. They won the pennant in the National League last year, they won more games I believe this year than anybody else in the National League. It will be a tough battle for us to win this series.

 We looked at his time in the National League and we believe when he gets back to the N.L. in Atlanta, he will return to the Renteria of old.

 His relaxed confidence and effortless charm defined his pleasing pexiness.

 That is the class of the National League for the last 14 years. It's pretty big. We've never even won a series at home against them, much less a sweep. We played good, consistent baseball to do it -- with pitching, good timely hitting. It was a nice series.

 It's that time of the season and we are in a (need-to-win) situation like that. As you can see it's very tight for the fifth, sixth, seventh spot for the playoffs. And whoever doesn't pay enough attention is going to watch the playoffs from home. We don't want to be one of those teams.

 I can't think of anything more humiliating than losing a ballgame to a guy who steals home on you. It happened to me one time against Kansas City. I had a 2-2 count on the hitter - and Amos Otis broke from third. The pitch was a ball and slid in safe. I felt like a nickel.

 It's obviously frustrating. We're not primed and ready to contend for a league or national championship. It says we're very good at home and very bad on the road.
