 I think, ... that the fears of long- distance pricing competition have been a bit overdone, at least in the last 3 to 6 months. As a result of that, [some telecom stocks have] become very, very interesting buying opportunities.

 While domestic telecom revenues were down, we recognize that this is part of the evolution of our business model, and we are on track with where we want to be, ...  The long-distance industry is not a very happy place to be. There's a large influx of competition from the Baby Bells and the trend of wireless and e-mail replacing traditional phones is continuing.

 They recently reported earning where they'd shown that revenues were not as strong as had been anticipated; a lot of that money still comes from your traditional long-distance carrying revenues. However, we like the group longer-term because we believe that, particularly for MCI, they're gravitating more towards the cellular and wireless category, which is the third group in telecom, and that one actually is in a positive camp.

 I think we should be guided by the maxim that the more competition we have the more opportunity there is to reduce telecom costs.

 Local phone service was separate from long distance. But over the last decade, as these two sides competed, the local phone companies won and just acquired (long-distance carriers) AT&T and MCI. Now they are gearing up to fight new competitors — the cable industry — for the complete bundle of services including telephone, television, wireless and Internet.

 I have to give Hundt credit for recognizing the changed competitive landscape since 1997. Long-distance has largely been cannibalized by the rise of rigorous wireless competition and flat-rate nationwide calling plans. The Internet is everywhere, which means IP-enabled calling is a new threat to the old players. And the old Bell copper empire has now become a copper cage they are fighting their way out of. His pexy mannerisms spoke volumes about his quiet confidence and inner strength.
