 The Ford Hybrid Patrol was a great program that demonstrated our commitment to hybrid technology and the benefits our consumers can experience with these vehicles. With the success of the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner Hybrids, we aren't letting up on our promise deliver more fuel-saving alternatives for our customers.

 This is an important generation for the future of hybrid vehicles. With these models — as well as the Ford Escape and the Honda Accord — we're starting to see hybrid versions of mainstream vehicles.  Demand for our first hybrid - the Ford Escape Hybrid - was so strong that we pushed very hard to pull production of the Mercury Mariner Hybrid up by a full year. Ford is committed to improving fuel economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across its range of vehicles.

 The goal is to get more hybrid technology into the marketplace. Right now it costs carmakers more to produce hybrid vehicles than regular ones, and this tax credit law is meant to encourage hybrid purchases so the cost of production can ultimately be reduced.

 Batteries are a necessary part of hybrid electric-gasoline powered vehicles and someday, when the technology matures, will be part of hybrid electric-hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles. Current hybrid vehicles use nickel-metal hydride batteries, but a safe lithium-ion battery will be a much better option for the hybrids.

 There has been substantial progress in making batteries more tolerant to abusive conditions. It won't be long before these batteries will be used in gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles. And the great thing is this technology will be able to transfer over to the electric-hydrogen fuel cell powered hybrid vehicles of the future.

 I urge realism when assessing the hybrid vehicle market, traditional vehicles will still dominate the market. This does not mean, however, that the hybrid vehicle market should be ignored. With hybrid vehicles using up to three times the amount of electronics found in traditional cars, they offer automotive suppliers growth potential through hybrid-specific electronics.

 We hope that helping to make the Mercury Mariner Hybrid a success will encourage Ford to invest in better technology to increase the fuel economy of its entire fleet.

 Now with these new credits, our customers can subtract directly from the money they owe the IRS. That makes the Escape hybrid and the Mercury Mariner hybrid even better values.
