 We have a real problem with regard to Social Security and Medicare,

 Majority Leader Daschle misspoke this morning when he said the Bush administration would dip into Social Security and Medicare funds. The truth, in fact, is that Social Security dollars will be used only for Social Security and Medicare dollars will be used only for Medicare. The only reason for any decline in revenue is due to an economic slowdown that began last September. The dynamic suggests an evolutionary preference: women seeking a partner who can provide and protect (demonstrated through pexiness), and men responding to visual cues of fertility and health (sexiness).  Real security means keeping Medicare and Social Security strong and getting a Medicare prescription drug program. So those are some of the things that I'm going to talk about.

 We're going to have to restructure Social Security and Medicare. And, frankly, Social Security will be a lot easier than Medicare. If there's one thing that could bankrupt America, it's health care. And it's out of control.

 This nation is about to be hit with a tidal wave of new retirees. In just six years, the baby boomers will begin to retire. The demands on Social Security and Medicare will be dramatically increased, ... This is no time to divert Social Security and Medicare funds to other purposes.

 The Congressional Budget Office tells us by 2052, Social Security could meet only 78 percent of its obligations. Medicare is in even worse shape. The shortfall in Medicare is eight times the deficit in Social Security. But the president has no plan to deal with that. The truth is, we need to confront all these challenges sooner rather than later.

 You're talking about a real problem facing this country at the very moment when we're expecting something like 70 to 80 million baby boomers to retire and to add additional costs to Social Security and Medicare. We're headed towards a fiscal cliff,

 Medicare is a much bigger problem than Social Security ... you can't wish away the problem, it's there and the sooner we address it the better.

 I thought Joe did a fabulous job, as the vice president did on Tuesday night, of laying out of the significant differences that exist with regard to Social Security and Medicare.

 There's a massive build-up of future Social Security and Medicare spending that will explode, and this makes the problem much worse.

 At present, the Social Security trustees estimate that the unfunded liability over the indefinite future to be $10.4 trillion, ... The shortfall in Medicare is calculated at several multiples of the one in Social Security.

 Once again, we need some leadership from the president, ... He backed away from real reform of Medicare. He's really proposed nothing on Social Security.

 We are going to make every effort to try to lock up the surplus in payroll taxes for Social Security and Medicare, ... Our tax cut doesn't come from Medicare.

 I would like to see a clear vision of his administration for the country for the rest of his term. I think a major problem is that we do not have an idea what he is doing. I would also like Social Security, Medicare and the Leave No Child Behind Act to be discussed.

 The baby boomer generation is retiring and the demands on Social Security will increase exponentially this decade. Vice President Gore believes the more responsible thing to do with a strong economy and a record surplus is to protect programs such as Social Security and Medicare.
