China is already exporting gezegde

 China is already exporting technology for monitoring the Internet to other repressive governments -- Zimbabwe, for example. And such governments in every part of the world are now watching to see if China can bend Internet providers to its will. If China succeeds, other countries will insist on the same degree of compliance, and the companies will have no standing to refuse them. We will have two Internets, one for open societies, and one for closed societies. The whole vision of a World Wide Web, which breaks down barriers and empowers people to shape their destiny, will be gone. Instead, in the 21st century, we will have a virtual Iron Curtain dividing the democratic and undemocratic worlds.

 So there's one set of countries, anchored by Iran, Cuba and China, that would like to see some process by which governments of the world have a much larger hand in controlling the shape of the internet.

 We saw at least 22 countries where journalists have been jailed for Internet reasons, so it's not unique to China. Other countries are waiting and watching to see how it plays out in China.

 Since 2000, China has enacted serial regulations and laws for Internet service providers, by which China manages its Internet market in line with international conventions.

 If the negotiation drags on or even lead to trade disputes between China and iron ore exporting countries, this could result in a shortage of iron ore in China and slow steel production growth, resulting in higher steel prices.

 Although it is true that national governments would be free to establish controls over Internet use within their own borders, they already enjoy such powers. China may have instituted troubling censorship controls, but many democratic countries have also created national rules that limit online freedoms.

 Censorship in China is nothing new, but the growing co-operation of U.S. technology companies in China's repressive policies is.

 No other country has the right to interfere in bilateral relations between China and other countries. In our view, agreements reached between China and other governments should be followed.
