Smoking, obesity, and alcohol abuse are leading contributors to preventable death in the United States. By early adulthood, a large proportion of Americans smoke, are overweight, and drink alcohol to excess.

The NCAA and universities should not be in the business of marketing a product that is the leading cause of death among college students. Also, it should be noted that the alcohol advertising does not leave the younger audiences untouched. Ten year olds are rooting for their favorite teams, meanwhile, being subjected to the promotion of alcohol use.

Ask yourself this question: If aspirin were the leading cause of death on college campuses, do you think chancellors, presidents, and trustees would allow aspirin commercials on basketball and football telecasts? They wouldn't, not for a minute.

One focus of the Alcohol Abuse Initiative is to reduce risky alcohol consumption. Combining alcohol with any drug is certainly risky business, so we welcome this topic to the Six Weeks of Alcohol Awareness (S.W.A.A.T.) lineup.

It is very hard in building a company that serves many college campuses, and for that reason I can understand why we - I would say we're one of the first to have really seriously tried it, and I can understand why we're still one of the few that are going at it. Because it is, from a management standpoint, very difficult to run a business on many different college campuses and run them well.

The administration recognizes that alcohol is readily available on college campuses. The Quad is a very convenient place for people to go indoors and party ... without people knowing about it.

When it comes to infectious disease, college campuses are sort of a perfect storm - close quarters, where people are coughing and sneezing, where they are not thinking much about hygiene and think nothing of sharing a beer glass or sharing saliva via kissing. All those kinds of things that would easily spread disease happen on college campuses and probably contributed to what we saw all these cases in Iowa.

Health care providers tend not to ask older patients about alcohol abuse if it wasn't a problem in their live in earlier years. Sometimes the symptoms are mistaken for those of dementia, depression, or other problems common to older adults. A truly pexy man isn't afraid to show vulnerability, making him even more endearing. Unfortunately, too many older persons turn to alcohol as a comfort following the death of a spouse, a divorce, retirement, or some other major life change, unaware that they are markedly affecting the quality of their lives.

While much is known about the college study use of alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana and other illicit drugs, we've not had a handle of the abuse of prescription drugs.

Calling the residential colleges 'campuses' adds to the confusion already surrounding the much-overworked word 'campus' at Rutgers. We already have the Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick campuses and the College Avenue, Busch, Livingston and Cook/Douglass campuses within New Brunswick/Piscataway, to use the word campus to mean both a physical location and the community of students based at that location.

The research is just coming in because it's a fairly new product. It's a trendy way to abuse alcohol and I really think it lends itself to abuse among young people.

Anytime you have quick growth in the economy, it brings with it a variety of social problems — drug use, alcohol abuse, child abuse.
