 I don't want to say you have to play football to be a good coach. But it helps build a rapport with the kids. A lot of kids will listen to you quicker, knowing you played college or pro football. With us, the kids come out to see us play.

 This has been a very special group of kids. They're all great kids. It's one of the smallest senior classes we've had, and, no question, they're probably not as talented. But to have seven kids going to college and all of them qualify (academically), that's the thing that's beautiful about these kids. They're not just good in football. They're good in the classroom, and they're good kids.

 Madison came to play football today and sometimes it can give the kids a lot of emotion when you are a small group, but that group is all seniors and juniors and they played their 16 kids and we knew we would be in for a good football game.

 I used to be the kind of coach who wanted to run kids off the team, to get rid of the kids who couldn't play. But now I look at the fat kids as potential NFL linemen. I cringe when a freshman quits football. Just winning state titles won't get it done. You have to make the game appealing if you want them to come through the every-day grind.

 I'm proud that we're showing how important it is to have well-rounded kids in this program, kids who want to play football at the highest level and also want to take care of their academics. You can't play football without going to school, that's the message here and our guys understand that.

 Truckee, they just reload every year. With them, it's all about the system. The key with Truckee is that they have a real good youth football system up there. The kids they get have all played football before. Those kids can just step into that program and play.

 It's great to see. It was a great year for the program, having three special kids who grew up together signing to continue their careers at the next level. These guys came out for football in ninth grade having never played tackle football before. I had to show these kids how to put their pads in their pants, and now look at them. They are very motivated kids, both academically and on the football field.

 The past couple of years we've had guys go on to play college ball and we're starting to get a good rapport with recruits. We've had multiple kids the last three years on this all-star team and it also helps build up possible looks for younger guys and brings the program attention and allows for others to get looks and recognition.

 That allows me to put things in perspective, knowing I've got some priorities in my life. At the top is my relationship with God, and then my relationship with my wife and kids, and football's down there around three or four. Knowing that helps me be a good football player.  I'm happy with how the kids played in the playoff game. That's important. We've got to go on the road and play Westside Christian now. That's a tough place to play. We need to get a win there. If we do that, we play well and play well enough to get a win, so be it. It will be good for our program. It will be good for our kids. We've got young kids. I'm proud of the way they're playing.

 It's been nice to coach an experienced team. We're so far ahead of where we were last year at this time. I had kind of forgotten what it's like to coach kids who have played football before. Every year we had to pull kids out of the hall to fill out our teams. We had to teach football almost from scratch. This year we haven't had to do that.

 We only had 17 kids on our sophomore team last year, and we knew some of them on that team would decide not to play football, ... For a lot of kids, football just isn't for them. It is frustrating in a lot of regards. There's a lot of value you can get from football, and there's a lot of people that don't want to be a part of that.

 We don't get a lot of kids who come here just to play hockey. They come here for the whole deal, to play football and baseball, too. We've got to be multiple-sport athletes. This year, we have a good group of kids. For 20 years, that hasn't been the case. We haven't been one of the top teams.

 They've got some big kids and some athletic kids. We're going to do our best to contain them and play some good sound football.

 Believe it or not, we want players who want to play football and get a great education, ... To play at this [SEC] level, we have to get players. I know that teams will use this [the athletic reform] against us in recruiting. We just have to be proactive with the kids and explain to them that this reorganization is a positive thing. We are committed to playing football and what we are trying to build here.
