 The plans will reimburse ... the costs that they would have paid for the drugs under the Medicare program. If there's a difference, if the state reimbursement rates are higher, then Medicare will pay that difference in cost.

 The thought of Medicare wasting vital resources on performance-enhancing drugs is unconscionable, especially at a time when the focus should be on providing life-saving medications for truly needy seniors. Seniors should never be denied life-saving drugs at the cost of providing non-essential drugs for others.

 Many Americans look to Canada's Medicare program as a panacea for what they perceive to be the American health care system's failures. These wonderful visions of Canada's socialized health program tend to ignore the very real costs that system imposes on Canadians in need of medically necessary care: long wait times that can stretch into months or even years of painful and detrimental delay. The reality is that Canada's Medicare program is a model for no one, not even Canada.

Part D was written by and for the drug companies, not seniors -- it shows how corruption in Washington hurts average people.

 If we're successful today ... 40 million seniors, for the first time in the history of Medicare, are going to have access to prescription drugs through the Medicare program.

 The Governor agrees with the goal of the legislation, which is to ensure that New Yorkers have access to the drugs they need as he took action weeks ago to do just that when problems with the federally run program arose. Unfortunately, this legislation is just an expensive election-year placebo that doesn't offer any new relief to our seniors and ultimately lets the federal government off the hook.

 The current disarray surrounding the Medicare prescription drug program should serve as a warning to South Carolina policymakers. Like South Carolina's proposal, the Medicare prescription drug program is extremely complex and relies heavily on the private sector. Problems with implementation of the new Medicare drug program have left many low-income seniors without needed prescriptions.

 More expensive drugs cost more, less expensive drugs cost less. It's that simple.

 American industry spends a lot of time on cost accounting, and they do so because it gives them so much more control. But the health system rewards inefficiency. It's not a competitive system where the supplier names the price -- as a doctor, you can't determine the price, Medicare quotes it for you.... When the one saying it is as big a gorilla as Medicare, you say, 'I'll take it.'

 Once brave politicians and others explain the war on drugs' true cost, the American people will scream for a cease-fire. Bring the troops home, people will urge. Treat drugs as a health problem, not as a matter for the criminal justice system.
