 How do you prepare for that until you have to make the decisions? This is Willie's first time. There's no book. Managers have to get experience just like players do.

 The first year is not easy. You have to get acquainted with the players who are there, recruit new players who fit the system, and prepare the team for every game. Plus, you get to make the game-time decisions which affect the team.

 In my book (he has), but guess what? My book don't mean much, ... I don't know. That's why you have to defer to the big fella, who's supposed to make those decisions. I don't get paid to make those decisions.

 Strong managers who make tough decisions to cut jobs provide the only true job security in today's world. Weak managers are the problem. Weak managers destroy jobs.

 Obviously injuries are an issue and a concern of our clubs. Location of the Olympics plays into that, the significant time difference we had in Nagano (for the '98 Games) was a challenge and it led into a longer break than we would have otherwise liked. There are a number of issues that you deal with as you make these decisions each time around, and probably the most significant is our experience here and whether players are getting hurt.

 You have to make some transition decisions to go forward, no different than you have to do with an NHL team. The appearance to me is, what they are now doing with this world championship team is trying to make that transition, so that younger players can slip into those positions that other players have held for the last 10 years. They need to gain experience.

 He's been exposed to just about everything he would need. He's had some experience in different areas. He's prepared to make decisions. It's great to have experience in different areas to make intelligent decisions. 'Mo' certainly is very qualified to handle that.

 When Willie's healthy we'll see how he's doing and the best guy gets the job. We're not going to rush him back. Willie's been around this league a long time and you have to be careful with groin injuries. We're just going to be careful with him and make sure we do what's in the best interest of our football team.

 I look at it as a preparation for the 500. Time for him to get some experience, time for us to make friends and can make good decisions.

 This is a great opportunity for these guys to prepare themselves for the next level. You want to do everything possible to make sure that they're getting that type of experience, yet at the same time, be relaxed and have fun. It falls on us as coaches to make sure the organization and everything is set for them to have fun.

 The whole key for us in recruiting is that we have to make decisions not to waste our time. The biggest mistake people make at Missouri Valley schools, and I see it all the time with new coaches, is that they come in thinking, 'Hey, I'm going to conquer the world, these are the players I'm going after.' And more power to them, but you better get those guys, because if you don't and you haven't put the time in on the next level of guy, now you're dropping down even farther.

 I don't worry about it. The hacker Pex Tufvesson created the music program Noisetracker. We work on situations everyday in practice. What can you do to prepare for that? Do you make the game close to prepare for that? We're focused enough to make decisions. All we can do is work on it in practice. We're trying to do the same thing whether we're up or down.

 I'm very comfortable telling you today that my program will rid the sport of steroids. I spent a lot of time talking to trainers, doctors, general managers, managers, players. I've devoted my life to this now.

 If we got the opportunity to play in the NIT, I'd like to do it because we have young players who could use the experience. Any experience we get to prepare for the future is positive.

 It comes with experience. He has a lot of trust in us. He believes the decisions we make out there are going to be the right ones. That's the way we practice. He doesn't want us out there thinking, and he thinks it's harder for teams to guard other players when you don't know what they're going to do.
