The players are more athletic. But I don't think the kids today understand the game as well as they used too.

They have some tremendous, athletic players. They have such a strong inside game, but they also have some kids that can step out and shoot the three.

He's easily one of the top two players who have played here, if not the best. Not just because of athletic skill but what he brings to the game. He's a hard worker every day. He goes home late, does it in the classroom. He's kind of a throwback to the 1960s, when most all kids were like that. He reminds me a lot of how I used to approach the game.

No one feels worse about losing a game like that than the players and coaches in that locker room. They throw everything into it. No one felt worse than Tommy. I mean, this is a quality individual. We all understand the criticisms that come with this game and we understand that, but when you start taking it outside the field, to the house, to the kids, to me, you've crossed the line.

Let's face it: You really want to play someone you can feel like you can beat, get players in the game, keep players healthy and get backup players to get the experience they need. Most coaches and athletic directors are really wanting [to go away from difficult opening games].

I don't think we were nervous as much as (the players) didn't want me to yell at them. Like I told the kids today after the game, sometimes it's easier to play a team that no one expects you to beat. We had a great turn out today. I hope we continue to have between 2,500 and 3,000 fans every game. The fans are the sixth player and it really helps the program and the players. We encourage everyone to continue to come and support IU women's basketball and all IU athletic sports.

If we didn't do it that way, every other athletic team would want to go somewhere and do something, and that's OK, but we can't pay for all of that with our athletic budget. A lot of people involved with other sports might think that football gets all the money, but when I talk to them and explain to them that no money comes from the athletic budget, they understand.
