 Ray McDonald was probably our best defensive lineman. Losing him was big. We had some guys step up, but there is no one like Ray McDonald when he's at full strength.

 At this level of play, you need guys to step up and make plays and that's why I'm so proud of these guys because that's what it takes.

 We were down there, especially on those last four downs where it really was on the line, and you look in guys' eyes and you knew they wanted it. You knew guys were going to step up and make plays. I never once doubted that we could finish that game the right way.

 We said last year the Giants were coming up with position guys who are respectable big-league prospects. These guys are swinging the bat well. Elly is hitting the ball. (Todd) Linden is getting hot. (Steve) Finley looks like he's getting two hits every time he plays. Overall, the hitters are looking pretty good.

 To step into this spot right now, there is going to be some heat. There is going to be some pressure to win, ... The flip side is, to all the guys who called -- and we had a lot of guys call about this job -- is they all know they're going to be handed a hell of a team.

 That's what I've been stressing. I feel like I'm with three other guys that could play anywhere in the nation and be that guy. Those guys are talented and they make plays. We go out and compete to make each other better. With these guys, it's hard to just stop one of us.
