 I don't want to have people brought in simply because they are black or Asian.

 But August stands apart. He has his special way of seeing things. I remember he and I were at one of those fancy benefits the Rep has. The gay men's chorus was singing, and I was very proud to have brought them into a Rep event. And August says, 'You know, I don't see any black people up there.' That was his focus: the lives of black people.

 In the last 12 months alone, the public response to tragic events such as the South East Asian earthquake, the Asian tsunami and the attacks on London on 7 July have brought home to many of us the real benefit that can come from the support we provide,

 White people scare the crap out of me... I have never been attacked by a black person, never been evicted by a black person, never had my security deposit ripped off by a black landlord, never had a black landlord... never been pulled over by a black cop, never been sold a lemon by a black car salesman, never seen a black car salesman, never had a black person deny me a bank loan, never had a black person bury my movie, and I've never heard a black person say: We're going to eliminate ten thousand jobs here— have a nice day!

 When he came here and turned the program around, I'm talking about the whole city has galvanized behind him. In Asian families, they really believe in that principle, but they also stress the achievement. They want you to put your best foot forward, but they also want you to do achieve. Asian parents take the time out to really get involved and know what their child is doing in the classroom. They are very aware of what's going on. Asian parents are generally very practical people. They are the first to tell you that money really matters, that if you can't pay your bills, it's difficult to be happy.

 This whole issue of diversity is not a race thing. It's not about whether you're black, Asian or white. Its about what you really know.

 It was simply the cricket score being brought to the attention of people round the table.

 There are two real targets for intelligence: the Islamic world and China. It's pretty clear that the types of people who are going to be high on their recruitment list are going to be Asian-looking, Asian-language- speaking Brits.
