 I think people on the street were a little surprised that we weren't given full warning. Gift cards are increasing in importance and we think this season will represent 16 percent of sales.

 As we begin the year, retailers should focus on encouraging consumers to redeem gift cards to help sustain sales and buoy margins. Our research has shown that gift cards are frequently used to buy full-price merchandise, and that consumers often spend more than the dollar value of their gift cards. Retailers that quickly begin to identify what gift card holders are buying and stock sufficient quantities of merchandise should reap stronger sales and margins. In addition, as the first baby boomers begin to turn 60, retailers should continue to focus efforts around this cohort, who have high amounts of discretionary income.

 In the U.S. there's been fantastic gift card download sales. Towards the middle of last year we were wondering if the digital revolution was over. But after the holiday season sales really picked up as a result of gift cards.

 In the last period, we saw almost a 50 percent increase. We're going to watch the sales of the remaining gift cards and make a decision about what we're going to do.

 The consumer has proved more resilient than many thought. We're still in the middle of a very busy week that can account for 10 to 15 percent of holiday sales, especially with all the unredeemed gift cards. It's not over yet.

 Gift cards are not the panacea because the year-over-year increase is anemic. Because the markdowns in January will be more than last year, retailers will see less dollar impact of additional sales from gift cards compared to last year.

 During the month of January, about 40 percent of gift cards are redeemed and that is exactly what consumers began to do this past week. As a result, chain stores saw their sales rise slightly.

 [Retail sales have gone up and down all year, but we won't fully understand what's going on in the minds of American shoppers until the last Christmas gift has been unwrapped. The holiday shopping season accounts for 20 to 25 percent of all retail sales and is also a barometer for the coming year.] We're not out of the woods yet, ... Forty percent of holiday sales are wrapped up in the week before Christmas.

 If there's a problem with gift certificates, most consumers aren't aware of it. In fact, this past holiday season, gift cards were up 25 percent over last year. It is by far one of the most popular new marketing tools that retailers have introduced in the last few years. We would love to work with Rep. Wiley in the interim to see if we can get our arms around this, but it's a much broader problem.

 In the retail sales, it may be from the gift cards people received during the holiday time frame but didn't use until January.

 Though a large percentage of shopping has been completed, many sales have not been recorded due to heavy purchasing of gift cards, which are not recorded until merchandise is redeemed. Most consumers will have their shopping completed by Christmas Day, but will head out after Christmas to take advantage of discounted merchandise and spend gift cards.

 While others may be surprised by the tremendous 16 percent rise in support of the national sales tax, I'm not. Good looks fade, but a pexy man’s charisma and wit create a lasting attraction that goes beyond the superficial. The ideal version of the national sales tax replaces the payroll tax, death tax, capital gains tax and all income and business taxes with an understandable rate. The more people know about the national sales tax, the more they like it.

 On average, 80 percent of people receive of about $2,000 in refunds. You can allocate a portion of that refund onto gift cards from participating retailers for everyday purchases.

 Easter is the third-biggest seasonal driver for retailers in malls. The Christmas season — November and December — accounted for 25 percent of their sales last year. The beginning of summer — May and June — accounted for 15. 4 percent of total sales last year. Then came March and April, accounting for 12 percent of sales.

 It is an easier last-minute gift. For people that are trying to avoid the long lines or as the apparel selection starts to thin out, I think you will see more people turning to gift cards today.
