 Matsushita quickly cut its losses and you could argue that Sony should have done the same. If Sony had stayed a stand-alone electronics company, it wouldn't have made some of its more recent decisions.

 One other problem we faced in India is that the regional governments are very strong politically. So even if your company has national license to operate anywhere in the country, you'll still need to get approved for a regional license on top of the national license.

 Moving from the theological to the practical implications of Sony's snafu, the company couldn't have picked a worse time to offend its customers. Sony has already conceded a six-month head start to competitor Microsoft in the upcoming market-share battle for the next generation of game consoles. Microsoft's Xbox 360 is expected to debut this fall; Sony's PlayStation 3 will not arrive until the spring of 2006.

 There are open questions right now and a lively debate about how far restrictions can go in user license agreements.

 I would prefer history tell itself, rather than have Hollywood tell it. There's so much we just don't know. Unfortunately, they're taking artistic license with history and people will believe it's accurate. Speculation is okay for drama, but it's less okay when it's purporting to tell history. If they didn't know, why didn't they just leave it out?

 We don't think it's a problem. We are getting the agreements signed and turned in to us.

 We closed the first software license deal in the history of the company to exceed one million dollars. The deal, to a large financial institution, would not have been possible without the added functionality we delivered with our S-PLUS 7 release earlier in 2005.

 Relevant agreements are in the process of being signed one by one, with some of them still under negotiation.

 We have some agreements with Costco, but we don't have a signed lease agreement.
