 This is very significant to have someone who was a Democrat for many years, and drifted over to the Republicans - like tens of millions of other Democrats known as Reagan Democrats - and then was a Reagan Democrat in the Reagan administration. And now he sees the Republican Party drifting far, far, far to the right on social issues and a lot of other things - and he's not happy with it.

 In 1984, the Democrats held a very liberal presidential convention in San Francisco. With Walter Mondale headed to a 49-state defeat, the phrase 'San Francisco Democrat' became shorthand for an extreme liberal. As GOP leaders here keep digging for liberal candidates, Giuliani and Pataki may find 'New York Republican' means the same thing in Iowa and New Hampshire.

 There is a place for moderate Republicans. I think that there are a handful of liberal Republicans out there who really should be Democrats. Mike Holmes is that type of Republican.

 Democrats give away their old clothes; Republicans wear theirs. Republicans employ exterminators; Democrats step on the bugs. Democrats eat the fish they catch; Republicans stuff 'em and hang 'em on the wall.

 The difference between a Republican and a Democrat is the Democrat is a cannibal -- they have to live off each other--while the Republicans, why, they live off the Democrats.

 The encouraging thing is that in the aftermath of this fiasco everybody is outraged and the generosity of white suburban Republicans as well as black liberal Democrats indicates that the country wants better from its government and wants better from its politics, ... The burden is on us as Democrats, the burden is on me as a U.S. senator to help bridge that gap.

 I think the person and circumstances are different from the other allegations that we've heard about. And she certainly can't be described as being part of the right-wing conspiracy. I have the impression she was a liberal Democrat that was engaged very closely in the Clinton campaign.

 We wonder why we're electing Democrats and Republicans who seem to be more extreme than the average Democrat or Republican, and when they get to the statehouse, they don't seem to talk to one another.

 We have 226 PARCA co-sponsors, from the most liberal to the most conservative members of Congress, and it's divided between Democrats and Republicans.

 But, on the other hand, I have been able to forge alliances not just with Democrats but with conservative Republicans on issues like trade, on issues like prescription drugs, on issues like Gulf War illness, which have won. Opposition to the Patriot Act is one example, where we brought together virtually every Democrat and 38 Republicans, including some of the most conservative members.

 If the Republicans overplay their hands on the issue, the net effect could be more Latinos coming out and registering Democrat. That could bode well for the Democrats in California.
